Davis: The Prospects for Mathematics in a Multi-Media Civilization
The content of mathematics and its applications are intimately related
both to the manner in which it is investigated and to the larger society that
supports those investigations. Civilization is moving into a multi-media age more
rapidly than historians of technology can record the movement. Though computers
derive from the spirit of mathematics, multi-media is bound to feed
back and profoundly affect mathematics itself. Some speculations will
be offered on the possible effects of this movement from the point of
view of the production and the uses of mathematics.
