Subject: ICM98-CL25: Footloose Tours, A First Glimpse
Dear colleague:
To convey some of the many facets of Berlin to the ICM'98
participants, and in particular to accompanying persons,
several Berlin mathematicians, their friends and spouses
have volunteered to offer informal tours of Berlin,
especially to places "off the beaten track".
Most of the tours are free of charge, except for possible
entrance fees (and public transportation fares for those
accompanying persons who have not bought the transportation
ticket offered by ICM'98). In a few cases professional guides
with particular expertise have been hired.
The list below is preliminary and is just intended to give
you an idea of what the Berlin mathematicians are planning
as a particular service for their ICM'98 guests. The final
list of footloose tours will be distributed via this ICM'98
E-mail information service, probably in early July.
We want to keep the organization of the footloose tours
very informal. Booking will be possible only via e-mail.
(Special e-mail addresses for footloose tour registration
will be announced with the final list of these tours.)
Places will be assigned on a first-come-first-serve basis.
There will, however, be a booth at the Congress registration
desk to help those who could not book through e-mail, to
handle last minute changes and, if possible, organize
additional ad-hoc tours or the repetition of tours for
which there was particularly great interest.
We want to keep groups small. Thus, group sizes are tightly
restricted. One exception is the organ recital in the
Berliner Dom where sufficiently many seats are availible
and which you can already book right now.
If not mentioned otherwise, the tours will start in front
of the main building of the Technical University, the site
of the Congress.
Ralph-Hardo Schulz (FU Berlin) is in charge of the organization

A FINAL REMARK: Don't forget to register for ICM'98! The reduced
registration fee only applies if you register and pay the fee by
May 1, 1998.

P.S.: Descriptions of the tours are in the making. Here are a few
examples:
1. Berliner Dom (Berlin Cathedral)
Guided Visit and Organ Recital
Date: Tuesday, August, 25
Meeting point: at 18:30 in front of the Dom (entrance)
Address: Berliner Dom, Am Lustgarten
(close to the street "Unter den Linden")
Entrance Fee for the guided visit and recital:
DM 15.- per person
(you will have to show your ICM name badge,
otherwise the fee is much higher)
Organist of the recital: Prof. Giesbert Schneider (Essen)
End: about 21:00
Description: The "Berliner Dom" was constructed under emperor
Wilhelm II according to the plans of the architect Julius
Carl Raschdorf between 1894 and 1905; it was damaged 1944
and partly reconstructed from 1975 till 1993. The "Dom"
originally consisted of three churches. Two of them are
still used while the memorial church for Hohenzollern, the
Prussian Dynasty, was pulled down in 1975. Beside the
architecture which is typical for Prussia at that time,
there are many mosaics, reliefs and paintings to visit.
Some of the sculptures are replicas of figures built in
1519. The beautiful organ was constructed in 1904
and has 7269 pipes and 113 registers.
Preregistration: To get the fee reduction, the local
ICM organizers agreed with the Dom-administration
that an estimate on the number of participants will be
provided on July 1, 1998.

This preregistration carries no obligation, but we
expect the majority of the preregistered persons to
come. Tickets not reserved through this preregistration
will be sold to the general public.
5. Tour Through the New Berlin (Guided Tour in English)
Description: Visit of the building activities and the architecture
on the former border line in the town centre.
Meeting point: in front of the main building, Technical University
Duration: 2-3 hours
6. Berlin Alternative
Description: An evening with Jazz in a Prenzlauer Berg pub
10. Walk Along the Former Border Line (Wall)
Description: walk from the Brandenburg Gate to Checkpoint Charlie,
visit of the "Infobox" and of the Checkpoint Charlie and wall
museum possible.
The Infobox is a building where information on the construction
work around Potsdamer Platz is available; the wall museum displays
many of the (successful) escape plans from East to West-Berlin.

13. Cemetery Tour
Description: guided tour to "Dorotheenstaedtischer Friedhof".
This has been a cemetery since 1762; it is the last resting place
of famous Berlin personages like Johann Gottlieb Fichte, Georg
Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, Karl Friedrich Schinkel, Heinrich Mann,
Hanns Eisler, Bertolt Brecht, Arnold Zweig and Helene Weigel.
20. Guided walk through the Zoo
Description: The Zoologischer Garten contains the world's largest
number of animal species. The walk is guided by the vice director
of the Zoo.
24. Strolling Through the Botanical Garden
Description: with 20,000 different species of plants on 43 hectares
one of the largest and most diverse botanical gardens
26. Shopping in KaDeWe
Description: KaDeWe is the biggest department store in Berlin,
it is worth seeing even without buying something.
