ICM98-CL32 (98/07/24): ICM Stamp, ICM Souvenirs, Footloose Tours
E-mail information service of the
INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS OF MATHEMATICIANS
Berlin, Germany, August 18 - 27, 1998
32nd Circular Letter
Subject: ICM98-CL32: ICM Stamp, ICM Souvenirs, Footloose Tours
Dear colleague:
This Circular Letter has three topics:
1. ICM'98 Commemorative Stamp
2. ICM'98 Souvenirs
3. Footloose Tours
1. ICM'98 COMMEMORATIVE STAMP
The Deutsche Post will issue a commemorative stamp on the
occasion of ICM'98. The first isssue of the stamp will be
presented by Hansgeorg Hauser (who is Parliamentary State
Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Finance which is
responsible for postal affairs in Germany) to IMU President
David Mumford (and a few other persons) during the Opening
Ceremony on August 18. The stamp was designed by the graphic
artist Norbert Hoechtlen (Munich). You can obtain an
impression of the stamp by calling the URL:
http://elib.zib.de/ICM98/souvenirs
(We scanned a copy of a preliminary version of the stamp.)
The Deutsche Post has agreed to opening a special post office
in the main building of the Technische Universitaet on August
20 and 21 (Thursday and Friday) from 10:00 to 16:00. At this
post office, you can buy the ICM'98 Commemorative Stamp to
enrich your stamp collection, and (our treat for philatelists)
you can get the first day of issue postmark.
2. ICM'98 SOUVENIRS
Besides the ICM'98 bag (which has the dark green ICM'98 colour
and carries the ICM'98 logo) that every ordinary member of the
Congress will receive at registration, you may want to bring
home some other souvenirs for yourself to remind you of your
days in Berlin, or as a gift for your company, children, or
relatives. We offer four souvenirs:
- a plush bear with the ICM'98 Logo (DM 15.-)
(The bear is the heraldic animal of Berlin.)
- watches (two sizes) with the ICM'98 Logo as digits
(DM 30.- each)
- T-Shirts (available in white and black) with the
ICM'98 Logo (DM 15.- each)
- black umbrellas with a pattern composed of the letters
of the ICM'98 Logo and BERLIN (two versions:
large for DM 80.- and foldable for DM 50.-)
These souvenirs were designed by Elke Behrends. Pictures of the
souvenirs can be found at the URL
http://elib.zib.de/ICM98/souvenirs
The number of items we ordered is very limited. (These souvenirs
seem irresistable. My children don't care for umbrellas but each
of my daughters has already asked for all the other souvenirs.)
Thus, if you don't want to be disappointed, buy early!
Moreover, we offer another highlight: Springer-Verlag will
publish a mathematical video with the title
VideoMath Festival at ICM´98.
based on the VideoMath role to be shown during ICM'98
in the Urania. There are two versions:
ISBN 3-540-92633-X (NTSC), ISBN 3-540-92634-8 (PAL).
The list price is 70 DM. At ICM'98, the video will be
sold for 40 DM.
All souvenirs will be available at the ICM'98 souvenir shop.
3. FOOTLOOSE TOURS
The announcement of the "Footloose Tours" in the Circular Letter
ICM98-CL25 resulted in very positive feedback. Many ICM'98
participants have already contacted the organizers and asked
for tour registration. In the APPENDIX below you can find a
Latex file with the list of the 37 tours offered and their
descriptions. You will find the list also at URL
http://elib.zib.de/ICM98/E/5
Registration can be made by e-mail to the following address:
foot@math.fu-berlin.de
except for the organ recital and visit of the Berliner Dom. If
you are interested in this tour please write to
dom@math.fu-berlin.de
Please register as soon as possible since otherwise the tour(s)
you are interested in may be booked out or cancelled. Before
booking a tour you should make sure that it does not overlap
with other events of your interest.
Most of the footloose tours are offered by Berlin mathematicians,
their friends and spouses. Please notice that some tours are
guided by a professional guide; these tours will have to be
paid in advance. To make things easy: Please bring the exact
amount of money along and pay the guide at the start of the
tour.
We will try to arrange further tours on short notice during
the Congress, provided there is additional demand. If you
have requests of this type please contact the footloose
tour counter for further information. We suggest to do that
during the first days of the Congress.
Sincerely
Martin Groetschel
President of the ICM'98 Organizing Committee
