Abstract: We create schematic maps from traditional vector-based, cartographic information. The lines of the original map are modified to meet geometric and aesthetic criteria in the resulting schematic map. However, in order to preserve topology after the transformations have been applied, usually topological information must be computed and consulted during processing. The known, existing methods for preserving topology during map transformation generally involve computing several constrained Delaunay Triangulations. This paper shows how to compute a cartographic schematic map, while preserving topology using simple geometric operations.
