As of November 1995, Cornell is using the standard 856 tag instead of the locally implemented 956 tag used previously. We anticipate transferring the 856 field from the bibliographic to the holdings record when data in an holdings record 856 field can be displayed appropriately in the OPAC. At present, only one 856 field will be allowed in a record because of OPAC display problems.
The 856 field should be used for any information located on a server for which an OPAC record is created.
Presence on this list indicates that the subfields are on the NOTIS tag table and decisions have been made about OPAC display and OPAC labels. In general, indicators and subfields should be used as per the LC Guidelines, using the appropriate subfields. If the subfielded information is important for access but Cornell does not normally display the subfield in the OPAC, an appropriate note should be devised to convey the information to users.
A subfield $9 should be used if the 856 field refers to a server location represented by a copy holdings record OTHER than the first (001) statement. When a $9 is used it should be the first subfield. Records containing an 856 $9 will upload to RLIN as error records.
