CUL Technical Services Manual/Location Codes
LOCATION CODES AND NAMES
Tables of location codes and the text of the OPAC display associated with the codes are maintained in several places: in the local NOTIS installation, by RLG staff for use in RLIN, and by service agents used by Cornell for processing its machine-readable records. All manifestations of these location tables must be kept synchronized so that records may be transmitted with data intact among Cornell, RLG, and the service agents.
Since maintenance of the tables requires considerable record keeping and effort, the pros and cons of making changes in the codes should be considered carefully before change requests are made, with one exception: changes in the 36 character library name displayed in OPAC (e.g., Engineering Library (Carpenter Hall)) are made only locally in NOTIS, so may be requested in response to public service need. Changes to the codes themselves, however, must be made in all versions of the tables and should be requested only when there is clear need for them.
Requests for changes to the location tables should be made on the Request for Change in NOTIS Location Tables form. The three-part forms are available in 201 Olin Library. The information requested on the form is necessary so that appropriate action may be taken. All requests will be reviewed by senior staff members.
Forms may be submitted at any time.
Four lists of Cornell location codes, in alphabetical order by code, follow: General Use Codes; Item Record Only Codes; Obsolete Codes; and Deleted Codes. All codes are defined for processing units LTCU/LUCU and LTOT. "LC" is the only code defined for processing unit LTLC. The lists indicate that certain codes are to be used in item records only; these should not be used in other parts of the record, such as copy holdings statements; they have not been defined for the RLIN system.
