In this chapter we will discuss a few physical object management techniques that are rooted in the relational context but were thoroughly adapted to the needs and requirements of the objet-oriented model(s). After introducing a sample object-oriented database schema (and an extension thereof) we discuss Access Support Relations, an indexing technique for path expressions. Then, we overview techniques for indexing within type hierarchies and describe the materialization of functions in an object-oriented context. We also provide an overview of techniques for deriving good object clustering and finally sketch a few proposals for storage models for objects.
