l Although attached to the 23d Infantry Division, this unit remained assigned to the 1st Armored Division, and troops who served with it may wear an armored division patch on the right shoulder of their uniforms. They and the men of the 2d Squadron (see next fn.) were the first to achieve this distinction since World War II.
 
2 Although attached to the 4th Infantry Division, this unit remained assigned to the 2d Armored Division, and troops who served with it may wear the 2d Armored Division patch on the right shoulder.

21 This unit was formed in Vietnam using three British-built Hovercraft. The unit name, never officially approved by the Department of the Army, was developed from the numerals of the 3d Brigade, 9th Infantry Division, to which the Hovercraft were attached.
