The Dom- und Diözesanarchiv Mainz contains records regarding Catholic emigration in general but not on individual emigrants. At the 1868 meeting of Catholics in Bamberg, headed by Karl von Isenburg-Birstein, a committee for the protection of Catholic German emigrants was established, which was later succeeded by the St. Raphaels-Verein zum Schutze katholischer deutscher Auswanderer. The latter, whose main purpose was the protection and care of Catholic German emigrants in North America and other countries, was established at the General Assembly of German Catholics in Mainz in 1872.
The material on the Raphaelsverein in Mainz, 1868-1941, contains correspondence regarding the society's establishment, statements of accounts, statutes, and miscellaneous papers (Sign.: DDAMZ Best.: Bischöfliches Ordinariat, Generalia Number R IV).

The Deutsches Literaturarchiv contains a collection of literary sources and scholarly contributions regarding comparative literary analysis from the mid-eighteenth century to the present. The collection includes documents on the reception of North American literature in Germany and German literature in the U.S., and relates to individual works and literature as a whole. Felix Paul Greve, who belonged to the Munich Bohème at the turn of the century, emigrated to Canada, where he played an important role in the literary history of that country. His early life is documented through his correspondence with Oscar H. Schmitz and Karl Wolfskehl.
Not yet documented in the catalogs is a large Karl May collection, donated to the library in 1997, that encompasses a large amount of Americana from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, mostly in German translation.
The Cotta archive contains reports by U.S. correspondents of the Allgemeine Zeitung, which was edited by Johann Friedrich Cotta and his successors, as well as the magazine Das Ausland (1828ff).
Finally, the manuscript division contains a substantial number of papers by authors who emigrated to the U.S. during the Third Reich.

The responsibility of the state archive in Munich is restricted to the Bavarian administrative district of Upper Bavaria. As such, the number of records on America is limited to the following entries: Generalkommissariat des Isarkreises (1808-37), Regierung des Isarkreises (1817-37), Regierung von Oberbayern (since 1837), Landgerichte älterer Ordnung, (1802-62) and the Bezirksämter/Landratsämter (since 1862). Within the latter records are documents regarding emigration. For further information, researchers should consult the finding aids, because a special card index is not available. In addition, there are situation reports from the Munich police department as well as some documentation referring to the U.S. military occupation of Bavaria (OMGUS Bavaria), 1945f.

From 1989-91 the city archive of Paderborn undertook a project on the registration of emigrants, 1800-1900. The aim was to compile a list of emigrants from the vicinity of Paderborn, including the former Kreis Büren.
According to the statistics gathered, the majority of the emigrants went to North America. The first publication that resulted from the project is the book Auf nach Amerika (2 vols.: vol. 1 by Ellen Rost et al, Paderborn, 1994; vol. 2 by Wolfram Czeschick, Paderborn, 1999).
More specifically, the city archive holds correspondence, portions of chronicles, family papers, two diaries about journeys to America, photos of emigrants, reports, death certificates, obituaries and approximately fifty letters by emigrants.

Finding aids: A list of emigrants is available on the archive's database.

The first New Ulmers in some cases had to leave Germany for political reasons after the failed revolution of 1848. One was Wilhelm Pfänder, whose life is documented at the Stadtarchiv (G 2 Pfänder).
  • Postwar military occupation:
  • Records of the city administration pertaining to its relations with OMGUS, 1945-50 (B 160, B 060/70, 4 and 6), the records of the Besatzungskostenamt, 1945-57 (B 151) and sources on the re-education of German citizens (Amerikahaus Ulm, 1949-52/ B 060/71, 1).
  • Relations between Ulm and America during recent decades:
  • Newspaper reports on Ulm citizens who emigrated to the U.S. or Canada after 1945 may be found in Auslandsulmer (G 6 III 2.4).
  • Further contact with Americans on the local level existed between 1951 and 1991 with American troops stationed at Neu-Ulm (Bavaria, G 6 II 9.20 ff). American soldiers, for example, gave donations on the occasion of the Bürgeraktion Münsterfenster in 1976 (G 6 X 6.12.6).
  • The most recent entry on German-American relations in the Ulm region is the case of the German-American Corps, founded in Ulm in April 1993 (G 6 II 9.19).

Emigration to North America: Records on emigration to North America are part of the entry Regierung von Unterfranken. The records Regierung von Unterfranken (14064-14111) cover emigration documents between December 1873 and December 1909; between May 1871 and December 1873 (14140-14145); and individual cases between 1886 and 1907 (14146-14207). Various holdings at Würzburg contain material on American citizens or American soldiers living in the region. Information on U.S. Army maneuvers and military exercises are located in the entry Regierung von Unterfranken (17506-17510), 1956-63. The holdings of some Landratsämter contain additional material concerning military and social issues: Landratsamt Hammelburg, meetings of the Besatzungsausschuß, 1956-63 (5089); Landratsamt Würzburg, establishment of the German-American Advisory Council, 1952/3 (845); Regierung von Unterfranken, invitations and minutes of meetings of the German-American Council, 1952-62 (17466); and cooperation with different departments of the occupation authority, 1951-60 (17468).
