One of our bibliographers has asked that we change vendor for the _United Nations Treaty Series_ due to the distinct possibility of saving some serial budget dollars. I have no problem with doing so except that I have no experi- ence with the publisher in question. Has anyone used UNIFO Publishers, Inc; P.O. Box 3858; Sarasota, FL 34230; Tel: (813) 953-7900; Fax: (913) 953-4999 Is this a reputable company? I'd appreciate anything you can tell me. We should like to take advantage of others' experiences in this area. How many of you are cataloging upon receipt in acquisitions? What criteria do you use for when to catalog on receipt vs. sending to cataloging? What is deemed acceptable copy? What percentage of materials received are cataloged on receipt? How do you integrate the process into your workflow? Does your process involve a selector review of receipts, especially approval plan receipts? (4) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 20 Aug 91 19:10:28 PDT From: Glee Willis Subject: More commentary on networking I agree that I "feel" an immediate rapport with those I meet in person whom I've previously known only via the Net. I know others MUST share this feeling with us. As a friend sez, "Yes, email is the greatest thing since bread, sliced or otherwise". Our profession is forever changed because of it! But it is still difficult to explain the impact of email upon our lives to the unfortunate who are not yet "converted", or who do not have access, such as my 71-year-old father. When I explained to him last night, that even before I arrived at two recent back-to-back conferences I had dates to go Cajun dancing, to lunch, and to a ballgame with people I'd met ONLY on the Net, his immediate response was, "Wow, that's very brave of you to 'reach out' to such total strangers" (actually these men and women invited me, but that's irrelevant). He chuckled when I reminded him, "But Daddy, they're all librarians -- of course we'll have plenty to talk about!" For a while I have been joking that we don't need just a *comprehensive* (X.500) white pages to the Net; what we really need is a "yearbook" with 1"x1" glossies of everyone out there, so that we can match so many e-addresses with faces. It seems so much more desirable to have this information now than it did in the days of just the phone and USnail ... [This is the second time that a query about this company has come up. The first time was in No. 93, Item 3, and there was no response. Given the importance of Karen's information, I urge anyone who may know anything to write it up. C.] We have a few books on order from Graybooks in Boulder, Colorado. They have been prepaid, and we have recently discovered that they have filed Chapter 12 bankruptcy. Has anyone any experience with this situation: advice, commisera- tion, etc. Does anyone have any experience with this company in particular recently? (6) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Fri, 23 Aug 91 11:04:21 EDT From: Susan Davis Subject: Tenets of acquisitions I know Joyce Ogburn and others are working away at some philosophical tenets for acquisitions (wish I actually had time to think about these, instead of doing them!), but I'd like to recommend all of us read Richard Brumley's excellent article in _AGAINST THE GRAIN_. It's in Vol. 3, no. 3 (June 1991): p.40+ and entitled "Acquisitions Librarians--Jack of all Trades?" I can personally attest to the need for "a strong back." Within two weeks of receiving the issue, I was busy "bugging out" my entire section so our floor could be cleaned and waxed. I drew the conclusion that we must be an important and integral component of the Libraries, because we had so much stuff!!! Great job, Richard, that article really made my day!! Brow Subject: visa cards I need to know if anyone on ACQNET knows of an Acquisitions Dept. having its own VISA card and using it to purchase materials from countries that don't accept payment in U.S. dollars. In our particular case, we are dealing with Australia and trying to purchase something from an Institute that only wants Australian dollars. They would accept VISA if we could provide that. Any thoughts? ***** END OF FILE ***** END OF FILE ***** END OF FILE ***** END OF FILE *****
