The grant requires that as much of the collec- tion as possible be purchased from minority or female book dealers. We can probably identify book stores which fall into this category, but I am not familiar with any library vendors who fit the bill. Can anyone provide information on either vendors or book store owners? The material purchased would have been published in the U.S. (3) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Sat, 5 Oct 1991 21:32 CST From: Peter Scott Subject: Publishers on ACQNET, junk e-mail I see no reason to exclude publishers or vendors from contributing to ACQNET. Indeed, I would encourage their participation. I would further suggest that: 1. Serials vendors mount their catalogs on telnet-accessible sites on the Internet. Paper copies of the catalogs from Faxon, Blackwell, Ebsco, for example, are fine, but are out of date as soon as they are published. The catalogs should be searcheable by title, ISSN, etc. Also included could be separate entries for new and forthcoming titles, delayed publications, mergers, and so on. 2. Book vendors, instead of mailing hundreds of approval slips through the postal service could make the same information available by FTP, akin to the way DRA does with its CIP entries. Files could be arranged by subject, for example, and once downloaded could be used by selectors to create new requests. 3. Publishers could also make information available in non-traditional ways, by setting up electronic mailing lists for those users who would be interested in receiving news on forthcoming books. I understand the concerns which have been expressed regarding _advertising_, whatever that may mean and to whom. I am purely interested in being able to obtain _information_ when I need it. The publishers and vendors have it ... why not encourage them to share it electronically , and save a few trees in the process? (4) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: 7 Oct 91 08:25:57 From: John Saylor Subject: Collection development outreach SURVEY ON COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT OUTREACH The Collection Development Working Group on Outreach at Cornell University is interested in knowing what kind of outreach or marketing activities you are currently involved with in your library. We are hoping to improve communica- tion with the library's users -- their understanding of what we do and our understanding of their needs, with respect to collection development. Also, what is the primary mode of communication with your user communities re general library developments? We would appreciate seeing printed examples of news- letters, etc., from your library, if it is not too much trouble to send them. We would also be interested in knowing if anyone sends out an automated acquisitions list. Qualified individuals demonstrate leadership in serials-related activities through their participation in professional associations, groups, and/or library education programs; make significant contributions to serials litera- ture; conduct research in the field of serials; develop tools or methods to enhance access to or management of serials; and, in general, strive to enhance our comprehension of the serials world. The award, presented by the ALCTS Serials Section of ALA and sponsored by the R.R. Bowker Co., may be divided among two or more individuals. Nominations and supporting documentation should be sent no later than December 2, 1991 to the chair of the award committee: Michael H. Randall, Serials Department, University Research Library, University of California, Los Angeles, CA 90024-1575, phone: 213-825-3386, email: ecz5ser@uclamvs.bitnet (6) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 8 Oct 91 16:15 EDT From: Betty Oktay Subject: CD-ROM Is there a catalog/listing/directory of CD-ROM products available for purchase? I know that it would be out-of-date the moment it was compiled but ... I am not looking for subscriptions but rather one-time full text. Specifically the question concerns the availability on diskette (or CD-ROM) the _ENCYCLOPEDIA OF WORLD ART_. What is a good source for this kind of information? (7) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 09 Oct 91 16:18:31 EDT From: Mary McClaren Subject: Automated systems in ACQNET directory Would anyone find it helpful to add to our ACQNET directory listings a field indicating the automation status of our acquisitions operations? This would require members to notify Christian of the name of the system in use (eg. DRA, NOTIS, in-house, etc.) or else specify "Manual". If this datum is added to our individual entries, a bonus is that Christian could produce an index arranged by system name (in addition to the ones he already generates arranged by name and state). Would you anticipate that such data would be useful to you? The topic of discussion will be inter- facing library acquisitions systems with university (or other parent body) accounting systems. The focus of the discussion will be on describing the system you are familiar with and exploring what ideal systems might provide. The format will be: 15-20 minute presentations by 3 people followed by discussion. Anyone who has experience with this and is interested in being on the program, or if you can suggest possible speakers, please contact: Stephen Marine, University of Cincinnati, e-mail:marine@ucbeh.san.uc.edu, phone: (513) 556-5880 ******* END OF FILE ****** ACQNET, Vol. 1, No. 114 ****** END OF FILE *******
