Subject: Gifts Clarification (RE: ACQNET 5:3:4) Let me clarify my earlier response (via Hunter Kevil's summary). My comments about the project we are currently engaged in to eliminate exchanges is only addressing _exchanges_ which for us are primarily serial in nature at this time. We have a very active gift program managed through our Friends of the Libraries including regular book sales. Subject: Obtaining Australian/NZ material Can anyone recommend a US vendor who handles Australian & New Zealand publications (trade as well as government publications)? Please respond to me personally, rather than to the list. Thanks for your help. Harriett Hobbs Acquisitions Librarian John Vaughan Library Northeastern St University Tahlequah, OK 74464 (4)---------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Fri, 10 Feb 1995 10:45:24 -0500 From: Hannah King (SUNY Health Science Center Lib.) Subject: CD-ROM Acquisitions Here at the SUNY HSC, my director, the media librarian, and I, the collection development librarian, discussed the process of acquiring CD-ROM titles. Which of us was best prepared to deal with CD-ROMS -- media or books/serials? Is a book in CD-ROM format still a book? Or is it equivalent to an audio or video tape? We decided that CD-ROM products can't be neatly classed and that both myself and the media librarian would need to select CD-ROMs appropriate to our area. In one ACQNET message, the poster identified book vendors who offering CD-ROM products and EBSCO has a solid history of CD-ROM publishing and distribution. If we categorized CD-ROMs according to source, acquisition librarians specializing in print materials would appear to be responsible for CD-ROM selection. However, many CD-ROMS are clearly visually oriented (e.g. _The Visible Human, Adam_) or interactive learning aids. It would appear that these types of CDs would best be selected by media librarians. We wonder if others have struggled with the place CD-ROMS occupy in a collection and who has responsibility for selection in other libraries. How do the rest of you treat CD-ROM products? Which department has primary collecting responsibility? Does any media librarian have the full responsibility for acquiring CD-ROM products no matter what the content with a budget to support purchasing? Have any libraries cut the print or media budget to provide a budget for CD-ROM acquisition? Thank you.
