Subject: New List for Gifts & Exchange I have noted below the instructions to subscribe to a new listserv devoted to the discussion of Gifts and Exchanges. This list was formed out of several requests from members of the Gifts and Exchange Discussion Group. A message I sent out a few months ago solicited over 30 responses and all but 2 were in favor of such a list. James Burgett of the University of Kentucky has graciously volunteered to be the listowner and I am very grateful to him for taking this on. Please read below to subscribe. Thank you. GIFTEX-L is a discussion list devoted to gifts and exchange librarianship. The list was established to provide a forum for discussing issues associated with the processing of gift books and journals donated as tax-deductible contributions to libraries and establishing, maintaining, and managing exchange of publications agreements between libraries. GIFTEX-L is liberally moderated; only commercial and personal messages will not be forwarded. To subscribe to GIFTEX-L, send the following e-mail message to LISTSERV@UKCC.UKY.EDU: SUBSCRIBE GIFTEX-L First Name Last Name To sign off GIFTEX-L, send the following e-mail message to LISTSERV@UKCC.UKY.EDU: UNSUBSCRIBE GIFTEX-L To post a message to the list, send mail to: GIFTEX-L@UKCC.UKY.EDU The LISTSERV program automatically forwards your message to the moderator, who then forwards it to the list. ============================================================ GIFTEX-L Moderator James Burgett Gifts and Exchange Librarian 204 King Library South University of Kentucky Lexington, KY 40506-0039 (606 257-5895) / jeburg01@ukcc.uky.edu ============================================================ [ADDENDUM TO THE ABOVE MESSAGE]: Date: Fri, 28 Apr 1995 15:22:34 -0400 From: Carole Bell (Northwestern U.) Subject: OP listserv Please send replies to crbell@nwu.edu, not to the list. In reference to my previous message about interest in a listserv related to OP: This listserv would be a discussion of topics on Out of Print (since it is coming out of the OP discussion group), not a list of items available or wanted. There are existing services, both commercial and listserves related to want lists. I have already had several messages expressing the desire to have OP discussions stay on acqnet, serialst and colldv-l and not start up another list. Please respond to me personally with your preference. I have had a possible volunteer to moderate the list if there is significant interest. [as indicated above] Carole R. Bell Acting Head. I can find a condensed version for $40 but that is not what we need. We need the original series. If anyone knows a distributor that carries this let me know. (Meanwhile, I'm searching the ACQNET archives for various video distributors and also am looking on AcqWeb! Thanks. The letter contains no specifics and we are wondering if anyone has more information about this situation. Thanks. If so, does anyone have a > method of dealing with the stamps? I don't have a problem with the staff collecting stamp from letters and packages -- I used to work at a large university research library and now at a small liberal arts college and neither institution claimed ownership to any postage stamps. I'm pretty sure that no one gave it much of a thought. I guess that I don't view collection of stamps from incoming mail at work much different that collection of stamps from personal mail received at home. It sort of amazes me that any bookseller (or stamp collector) would be bitterly complaining over such a thing ... would the same person be angry that I receive foreign postage stamps on personal mail? Or that someone gave me some foreign postage stamps? We deal with some second hand booksellers who are upset that we sell discarded books to the students at an annual book sale (without offering sales to the booksellers first). In such an issue, as well as collecting stamps, I recommend that you set a policy which works for your department and institution and don't let an outside business interest influence your decision unduly. I'm wondering if libraries that have issued approval plan bids recently have added new requirements relating to use of the Internet, or if they are asking for other new electronic capabilities from approval vendors. Our library spends approximately $300,000 per year on its approval plan and uses the INNOPAC acquisitions system. Jan Kemp Head, Acquisitions Dept.
