Please welcome to the acquisitions community LEE LEIGHTON, head of this new service. Lee has been head of Catalog at Berkeley since 1990 and came to us from Harvard Law Library. As many of you have already learned, I am reinventing my library career starting in Berkeley's Teaching Library. This is a 100% break for me from acquisitions and collection development, shifting my focus to the possibilities for users of the real and virtual library of the present and future. Lee may be reached at lleighto@library.berkeley.edu and at my former telephone and fax numbers. JOE BARKER (2)---------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 24 Jul 1995 10:42:20 -0400 From: Heidi Simon (Harvard U.) Subject: Summary of OP Science Dealers on the Internet At the beginning of July I posted a message asking for any known out-of-print science dealers with searchable internet databases. The following is a list of responses I received. Powell's Technical Bookstore 33 NW Park Portland, Oregon 97209-3300 (503) 228-3906 (503) 228-0505 (fax) (800) 225-6911 gopher: gopher.technical.powells.portland.or.us WWWeb: http://www.technical.powells.portland.or.us/Welcome.html Powell's does have a searchable database. Jerry Alper, Inc. 271 Main Street Eastchester, NY 10707 (914) 793-2100 alperbooks@delphi.com Alper's does not have an internet database-but will search your want list against their stock. Virtual Bookshop http://www.virtual.bookshop.com This was listed in "Publisher's Weekly", May 29, 1995 p.57 along with other book-related sites on the internet. They do have a searchable database. They are not only science-specializing in rare, first editions, antiquarian, collectible and fine books. Tolliver's Books PO Box 67426 Los Angeles, CA 90067-0426 -mailing address- 3640 S. Sepulveda Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90034 -office address- (310) 838-9213 Tolliver's is not on the internet, in fact he is not even computerized. However, he reportedly does a good job of searching requests and the prices for science books are very low. Blackwell's North America (800) 547-6426 WWWeb: http://www.blackwell.com I checked out Blackwell's WWW pages and was very impressed. While, they don't have a searchable database they are accessible via the Internet and sending a list seems like a simple process. (I have not tried it yet). Those are all of the responses I received. My apologies for taking so long in getting this information out. Also, my thanks to everyone who sent me this info. If anyone has any questions, etc. Please contact me. Heidi Simon Cabot Science Library Harvard University hjsimon@fas.harvard.edu (3)--------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 24 Jul 1995 11:14:42 -0400 From: Dorothy Ruyak (Williams & Wilkins) Subject: Williams & Wilkins Subscribers [Ed. note: This was discussed on SERIALIST recently and has been cross-posted to ACQNET] In April, Williams & Wilkins enhanced its customer service capabilities when it moved to a new computer system called Publisher's Advantage Computing System. The advantage to us is greater flexibility in processing work, easier to access information in responding to customer telephone calls, and quicker response to special situations of interest to our customers. Advantage is a product of T and B Computing out of Ann Arbor, Michigan. One of the first activities on the new system was to send renewals to subscribers in 1994. We focused on those subscribers who subscribe through a subscription agent in the past, but who, according to our records, had not renewed for 1995. Because of the conversion and the way the records were maintained on the old system, a number of renewal notices were sent to those who had already renewed through a new agent. In some cases, institutional subscribers received as many as 54 separate, seemingly duplicate, notices. We apologize for any inconvenience these notices may have caused, but thank you for your patience. Records were corrected as we received information from you. Is this the right conference to have questions answered regarding the distribution of library book and periodical budget monies among the various academic departments on campus? If so, does anyone have a formula for a fair distribution that is working for you? Rita R. Lawson [Ed. Note: On this topic you can find plenty of discussion in the archives of ACQNET, SERIALST and COLL-DEV] (5)---------------------------------------------------------------- From: Eleanor Cook (Appalachian State U.) Subject: Need More Feedback! I have received only a handful of replies concerning my query regarding commercial press releases on ACQNET. I am surprised to find NO substantive responses so far from any of the publisher and vendor subscribers of ACQNET. The one I did receive had ACQNET and ACQWeb's purposes confused and I think my reply to that person hopefully set the matter straight. ACQWeb DOES announce links to new publisher and vendor web sites on a regular basis, and will continue to do this. Surely the commercial sector has some thoughts on the matter. As for library subscribers, should I assume from 4-5 responses that we are in agreement that we do not want a plethora of commercial press releases? That was the sense I got from the replies thus far. Is everyone on vacation or is everyone merely overwhelmed with work and e-mail? ****** END OF FILE ****** ACQNET, Vol. 5, No. 25 ****** END OF FILE ******
