Subject: ACQNET subscriber list shielded With the permission of the Editorial Board, I have taken steps to shield the subscriber list from the "review" command. Increasingly there are methods that can be used to make alphabetic sense of the list, or it can be used in its raw form as well. I was worried that commercial entities were invoking the "review" command and possibly using the list for promotional purposes. I have no specific proof of this, so forgive me if you think I am paranoid. I have seen enough "spams" on other unmoderated lists to wish to avoid similar for ACQNET subscribers. In the old days we shared a directory of subscribers and their full addresses. This is no longer feasible with over 1500 subscribers, many who come and go on a regular basis. It is all Cynthia and I can do to keep up with it. If any subscriber of ACQNET wishes a copy of the alphabetic list of subscribers, you may request it from me. However, you must tell me why you want it and what you plan to do with it. Commercial uses are prohibited. I hope this meets with the approval of most subscribers. Iowa) Subject: ALA/ALCTS Acq Libn/Vendors of Lib Matls Discussion Group John Riley of Ambassador Book Service and Cynthia Coulter of the University of Northern Iowa serve as co-chairs of the Acquisition Librarians/Vendors of Library Materials Discussion Group for 1995/1996. We would like to ask the readers of ACQNET for their input to our discussion topic for ALA MidWinter in San Antonio. Our tentative title is "It's Not Just the Two of Us Anymore: A Trialogue with Librarian, Library Materials Vendor, and Library Systems Vendor." Premise: Increasingly, both librarians and vendors alike have come to recognize a not-so invisible third party in their efforts to obtain library materials. That third party is the vendor of the library system. Vendors of library materials have many exciting new products and services to offer libraries with the implementation of automation. Many libraries can't wait until they can take advantage of electronic ordering, claiming, and invoicing, to name a few. Some, if not all, of those advances depend upon the ability of the library's automated system to support those services. The vendors of library systems must decide, among all the competing demands, which to research, develop, and market. We would like to provide a forum at MidWinter in which a representative of each of the three groups (librarian, vendor of library materials, and vendor of library system) can talk briefly about those services offered by vendors which require an interface with an automated system, each approaching the topic from their own point of view. Our questions to you: What kind of questions would you ask if you could get a librarian, a library materials vendor, and a library systems vendor in the same room? (No, that's not an attempt at a bad joke!) Who, from each of the three groups, could you suggest that could address this question? Is this topic of interest to you? Thanks for your input. If you are an Innovative Interfaces site and are obtaining MARC records with your approval books, I'd like to hear from you, at stevens@u.washington.edu. I'll summarize whatever I learn for ACQNET. Subject: Extra Shipping charges We have an on-going argument with our a-v supplier about shipping charges on replaced materials. If we receive a video tape that we discover is not in good condition, we return it to the supplier and ask for a replacement. By this time, we have paid the invoice, so we have paid the initial shipping charges, and of course we pay to have it sent back to the supplier. We are then not thrilled about having to pay a second set of shipping charges for the replacement. Our contention is that we have already absorbed two sets of charges, and that the replacement was made necessary through no fault of ours. Our supplier contends that he doesn't know that he has shipped out a defective video tape and that it is simply the cost of doing business. No other vendor/supplier has asked us for this second shipping charge payment. Opinions for the librarian and vendor community? We're willing to back down if convinced we're wrong. We recently received a flier for several publications on American Indians from a company in Hamburg, MI, called Native American Book Dist. The main title advertised is _Biographical dictionary of Indians of the Americas_, 2nd edition. Although they are not on any of the lists I have of suspected Gille companies, the flier looks to me like it is. Does anyone have any experience with this publisher or their publications? Let me emphasize that I have absolutely no evidence that they are anything but reputable publishers, and am in no way criticizing them. But because of my feeling about the appearance of the flier, I'd like some input before ordering a $375.00 item from them.
