We have been advised that our database records will be unavailable for revisions for at least two months. We are searching for ways to continue the acquisitions and cataloging work flow in the interim and prevent a serious work backlog when the database records are returned to us. We are interested in hearing from other libraries who have already gone through this procedure, particularly those who have online acquisitions and download bibliographic records at that point. (We are a DRA site). Any information you could share with us regarding advance preparations, successful or unsuccessful interim acquisitions and cataloging procedures, and problems encountered after database return would be most appreciated! As time is short, please reply directly to me instead of to the list! Thanks in advance for your help! Moody) I saw your September 29 inquiry about resources for technical services, particularly acquisitions. ALA published _Guide to Technical Services Resources_, edited by Peggy Johnson in 1994. It has over 2,000 basic (and more technical) references for technical services. It's 313 pages and costs $60. ISBN 0-8389-0624-9. Reviewed in LRTS, October 1994, p. 427-9. (3)--------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 18 Oct 1995 15:24:43 -0400 From: Doug DeLong (Ill. State Univ.) Subject: Credit Cards in acquisitions A month ago I posted an inquiry regarding the use of credit cards for the purchase of rush items or other items where the publisher/source would not ship with a bill. I received 7 responses; all positive. All three "leading" cards are used; some libraries had had difficulty with acceptance when trying to use American Express. Credit limits ran from $3,000-$10,000.00. One Canadian library had difficulty reconciling the exchange amounts within their automated system; another Canadian library did not mention this as a problem. The primary use was, as expected, rush orders when publisher requires prepayment; overseas orders (including from Canada to the US) were also mentioned. Most of the respondents were from smaller institutions or federal (US and Canadian) agencies. What are we going to do? Our Purchasing office is still investigating; in the meantime we will be using a personal card that has the university's name on the account. We will also stress state sales tax exemption and have the certificate to fax if necessary. Thanks to all who responded or inquired. Can anyone out there help me with an address or phone or anything? THANKS! Vicky Burkholder (5)--------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Fri, 20 Oct 1995 14:06:51 -0400 From: Margaret M. Axtmann (Univ. of Minnesota Law Lib.) Subject: Phone books Does anyone purchase individual phone books any more? Years ago it was easy to get them from the phone company, but now it is much more difficult to figure out what's available and how to get them. Our latest local phone book does not give any information about how to order other phone books, which leads me to think they don't want to be in that business any more. I know there are CD-ROM products (which we are exploring), but we are really only interested in the white and yellow pages of selected major cities. Does anyone have any hints about the best way to obtain these? ************************************************************ Margaret Maes Axtmann Assistant Director for Collections and Technical Services University of Minnesota Law Library Voice: 612-625-4301 Fax: 612-625-3478 ************************************************************ (6)------------------------------------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Oct 1995 14:23:55 -0400 From: Judith Eannarino (NLM) Subject: OCLC/AMIGOS CD I would appreciate hearing from anyone with recent experience using the OCLC/AMIGOS Collection Analysis CD. I am interested in your views regarding ease of use, principal applications in your library, beneficial outcomes, any problems, and so forth. Please e-mail me with your comments, rather than posting them to the list. (I can summarize for the list if there is interest.)
