Is anyone else attempting to use it? Been successful? To me, so far, the documentation is so sparse that everything is trial and error. I'm especially have difficulty with the Reports section. Any insights?? Should I give it up or does it all work out once you get the hang of it? - Thanks for any help. - (I have called the support people at Yankee but it's frustratingly slow) Dianne Witte Email: WITTED@lib.beloit.edu Technical Services Librarian Phone: 608-363-2486 Beloit College Library FAX: 608-363-2487 731 College Street Beloit, WI 53511-5509 (2)--------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 08 Nov 1995 16:25:52 -0500 From: Ben Hood (Stonehill College) Subject: Out-of-print quotes - Follow-up In October I posted a query (ACQNET 5:31) about automatic vendor shipment of out-of-print books versus quotes. I would like to thank the people who responded; their advice was very helpful in my decision to allow our OP dealer to ship automatically up to a ceiling of $75. Since several of the respondents expressed interest in the other responses to this listing, I will summarize them here. I received 9 replies directly, all from librarians. A helpful response from a dealer has already appeared (ACQNET 5:33). Five of the libraries have arrangements with dealers for automatic shipment, though their price ceilings vary from $50-75 or even $100 for foreign titles. Another library requires quotes on domestic titles, but allows its foreign dealers to ship automatically. All of these libraries expressed satisfaction with their dealers' performance. A couple of people advised measures to protect against inaccurate or unacceptable order fulfillment, such as specifying same edition only and acceptable condition. Timely quotes from dealers, by fax, e-mail, or phone is an alternative pursued by some libraries. This allows them to review the quotes but still get back to the dealer the same day. An approach common to several libraries, in one case combined with a $50 ceiling for automatic shipment, is to have vendors like BNA, Midwest, or Harrassowitz proceed automatically to OP searching rather than cancelling a firm order for a title which is OP. The one response opposed to the idea of a price ceiling emphasized the advantages of sending out lists to multiple dealers. This allows the library not only to pick the best price from among the quotes received, but to determine "which dealers have consistently fair and competitive prices." Evans (Lafayette College) Subject: (1) _Spanish Books in Print_ -- Alternatives AND: (2) Consortium Purchasing (1) _Spanish Books in Print_ When Bowker changed its paper version of _Spanish Books in Print_ to a CD-ROM product and doubled the price, I could no longer justify keeping this as a tool for verification. For our library, this resource is also not convenient to use as a CD-ROM. I have found a few sites on the internet, like the Latin American Book Store which has been helpful for verifying some current titles. I would like to know what other resources might be helpful. (2) Consortium purchasing I would like to know if any library which belongs to a consortium which has a cooperative purchasing agreement for books, standing orders and videos would be willing to share their experiences? The consortium to which we belong has just completed an agreement for books and would like to do the same for s.o.'s and videos. Dan Evans Head, Acquisitions Dept. I wrote to Gale Research on this matter last May, suggesting they redesign their massive 22x15.25" forms. I addressed the letter to the Marketing Manager and sent it last May, however I received no response. I was pleased to see B&T acknowledge the problem. As a member of our campus environmental task force, I add my voice to B&T's encouraging acquisitions librarians to voice their concerns and to work with their purchasing departments where indicated to inform vendors that libraries are environmentally conscious consumers. I will shortly be contacting all our vendors to change our copy requirements wherever possible. **************************************************************** Pamela Rose BITNET: hslmela@UBVM Head, Acquisitions INTERNET:hslmela@UBVM.CC.BUFFALO.EDU Health Sciences Library PHONE: (716) 829-2408 University at Buffalo FAX: (716) 829-2211 3435 Main St. BUFFALO, N.Y. 14214 ***************************************************************** (5)-------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 15 Nov 1995 15:53:47 -0500 From: Karen Reardon & Xin Li (Yale U.)
