Isotov (Univ. of Hawaii) Subject: International Trade/Asia-Pacific Selection Aides [NOTE: Please send responses to Sonia, not to the list, Thanks -- Ed.] Aloha to everyone -- I'm a student of library science here are the University of Hawaii looking for selection aides in the area of International Trade - Asia/Pacific. Can anyone turn me on to the state-of-the-art tool/s for collecting in this area? Well appreciated. -------------------------------------- Sonia Isotov, MLIS student University of Hawaii 808/875-2400 -------------------------------------- (2)-------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 28 Nov 1995 11:04:10 -0600 (CST) From: Anna Belle Leiserson (Vanderbilt Law) Subject: CCH sold to Kluwer CCH Incorporated, one of the largest tax law publishers, reported yesterday (11/27/95) that they have agreed to be sold to Wolters Kluwer NV for $1.9 billion. It is estimated that CCH's revenues for 1995 will be $600 million. This represents one more in a long series of major U.S. law publishers being purchased by non-U.S. companies. Recently Reed Elsevier, which already owned Michie, purchased Lexis. A few years ago, International Thomson (Canada) bought Lawyers Coop, Clark Boardman, Callaghan, RIA and Warren Gorham & Lamont. That leaves Shepards, Bureau of National Affairs, Bender (owned by Times-Mirror), and West. As many of you know, three months ago West disclosed that it is considering sale. What does this mean for law libraries? With price tags as high as $1.9 billion contrasted with annual revenues of $600 million, one can only assume even greater increases in our already abnormally large percentage increases for subscriptions. Subject: Budget Allocations By Subject Areas Some members of our faculty have resurrected the "we need a library budget allocation formula" debate, which in its past incarnations, has not proven particularly successful. Can anyone provide me with citations to, information on, or personal experiences concerning the allocation of library acquisitions funds by subject in order to develop areas which are new, outdated or weak? In particular, I'd like to have some idea of who is involved in the process of identifying areas which need support (faculty?, librarians?), how the areas of need are identified and whether the results are better or worse than the standard method of allotting a dollar amount to each department to spend as it sees fit. ***************************************************************** Terry Skeats, e-mail: tskeats@hera.ubishops.ca John Bassett Memorial Library, fax: 819-822-9644 Bishop's University, phone: 819-822-9604 Lennoxville, Quebec, Canada J1M 1Z7 ***************************************************************** (4)--------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 04 Dec 1995 10:00:55 -0500 From: Kathy Mitchell (Nelson Atkins Museum of Art) Subject: RE: Yankee Folio I, too, have had some problems using Folio. I agree that the documentation is next to no help at all. I have found that in using the Reports section, you have to submit a report and then wait a while before you can retrieve it. I usually submit a report and then do something else on Folio if I need to, or log out and get back in in a few hours. I have found that specifying a period of time longer than I really need, say one month, and using the specific account number (we have two) that I want to receive info. on works pretty well. I have had some luck reading the report once it is ready, though I haven't been able to print it out. Also, the Folio system in general seems very slow, and I wondered if this is just a function of our particular internet connection, or if it is slow for other users too. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Kathy Mitchell Acquisitions Assistant Spencer Art Reference Library Nelson Atkins Museum of Art 4525 Oak Street Kansas City, MO 64111 (816) 751-1217 %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% (5)--------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 04 Dec 1995 10:36:17 -0500 From: Pamela Rose (Health Sci-Univ. at Buffalo) Subject: Electronic ordering using BNA's System We have been using BNA's internet connection to order quite successfully. We separate requests designated to go to BNA, create the bib record on our OPAC (NOTIS based), connect to BNA's NTO/Direct Order through the Internet, and if the title is available, order it on the spot (we have the PO number from the OPAC record number). We then go back to the OPAC and create the order coded so it will not print. For those titles which we cannot order via internet, we simply create the order as usual to print out the next day. We were skeptical at first, but now find the procedure and work flow to be smooth and uneventful. As we get used to going through the internet for other tasks (verification), we are exploring other WWW resources like the recent AAUP global electronic resource. We're looking toward the day when our system will interface directly with vendor systems, and can eliminate the move from one system to another. One gripe we have with BNA's NTO is that we do not have the ability to query our order status online. We can see that we have a pending order for a particular title, but we cannot call up all outstanding orders or see if a report was generated. That's one feature I'll be looking for in other vendor systems, and hope BNA will implement it in NTO. ***************************************************************** Pamela Rose BITNET: hslmela@UBVM Head, Acquisitions INTERNET: hslmela@UBVM.CC.BUFFALO.EDU Health Sciences Library PHONE: (716) 829-2408 University at Buffalo FAX: (716) 829-2211 3435 Main St. BUFFALO, N.Y. 14214 ****************************************************************** (6)--------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 05 Dec 1995 10:19:07 -0500 From: Roxy Zimmerman (National-Louis Univ.) Would someone consider sending in a posting that compares telephone CD products? It seems that this is a question that comes up frequently on different lists. Thanks -- Ed.] Does anyone know of a CDROM phone directory? We have been purchasing sections of the Phonefiche from UMI for several years. We are unable to subscribe to all the sections we need and it is difficult to use. I have seen some literature in the past on such a product but can not remember the vendor.
