Dole (SUNY-Stony Brook) Subject: Allocation formulae I am looking for examples of allocation formulae that divide library materials budgets into subject funds (one allocation covering both books and serials per subject). I would prefer example formulae that are currently in use in mid to large-sized academic libraries. Please respond to me by e-mail (wdole@ccmail.sunysb.edu) or post to the address listed below. I would be happy to summarize the responses for the list. You might want to remind readers that a few years ago I surveyed library school deans about the amount of education for acquisitions offered in their programs. My paper was presented at the Charleston Conference and then published as "The Present State of Education for Acquisitions Librarianship" in _Library Acquisitions: Practice and Theory_, Vol. 15, #3, 1991, Pgs. 359-64. Hello, As a novice to this field, the questions I am asking may be old hat to many, and that is why I hope I have come to the right place. Following a bit of research, I am confused about who actually does the real "buying" in the U.S. public library systems. Is it the individual libraries by means of an acquisitions librarian/manager? Are purchases made by means of a representative from the local city hall? Is each place run differently? Is a current list of librarians/managers available? Thanks in advance for your help, and anxiously awaiting your input. I don't know how many of you use Bibbase, a stand-alone system for acquisitions developed by Library Technologies, but we have been doing so satisfactorily for the past ten years. With the year 2000 problems arising on the horizon, I have been after the company for over a year to clarify whether they will be ready for the change. Today I finally got a message from Tom Gilbert explaining that as of January 1998 the company is no longer selling the product, nor are they offering software support. The most they will do for customers is provide a fix that allows you to enter the year 2000 in a fixed field, but no "date math" can be done - i.e. don't expect to process any reports that rely on date calculations. This has come as quite a shock to us, and we are extremely disappointed in the company's offhand manner. They must have known their plans months ago, but did not bother sending any information out to customers. I would be interested in hearing from other Bibbase customers, privately if you wish, as to whether this is also news to you.
