Snapshot and case studies of current usage of Creative Commons (and other open content) licences by cultural heritage organisations in the UK, Final Report. Eduserv Foundation, October 2007.
From the Executive Summary: "This study investigates the awareness and use of open content licences in the UK cultural heritage community by way of a survey. Open content licensing generally grants a wide range of permission in copyright for use and re-use of works such as images, sounds, video, and text, whilst retaining a relatively small set of rights: often described as a 'some rights reserved' approach to copyright. For those wishing to share content using this model, Creative Archive (CA) and Creative Commons (CC) represent the two main sets of open content licences available for use in the United Kingdom. The year of this survey, 2007, marks five years from the launch of the Creative Commons licences, two years since the launch of the UK-specific CC licences and two years as well since the launch of the UK-only Creative Archive licence. State Library Agencies: Fiscal Year 2006, by Barbara Holton, Patricia O'she,Cindy Sheckells, Suzanne Dorinski, and Michael Freeman, published by the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS) November 2007.
From the Introduction to the Report: "This report marks the first release of library statistics data from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. It contains data on state library agencies in the 50 states and the District of Columbia for state fiscal year (FY) 2006. The data were collected through the State Library Agencies (StLA) Survey, the product of a cooperative effort between the Chief Officers of State Library Agencies (COSLA), the U.S. National Commission on Libraries and Information Science (NCLIS), the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), and the U.S. Census Bureau. This cooperative effort makes possible the 100 percent response rate achieved for this survey. The frame or source of the list of respondents for this survey is based on the list that COSLA maintains of state library agencies. The FY 2006 survey is the 13th in the StLA series. The data upon which this report is based are final. "

e-Infrastructure Security: Levels of Assurance project (ES-LoA) Final Report, by Mike Jones, Ross MacIntyre, Terry Morrow, Aleksandra Nenadic, Stephen Pickles, and Nina Zhang. Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC), 9 November 2007.
"The introduction of a distributed authentication and authorisation environment (e.g. using Shibboleth), creates a new requirement for mechanisms that support feedback on the confidence level of the authentication process. Some resources may be considered more valuable or sensitive than others and thus require greater levels of assurance (LoA) that the person or process attempting to gain access is really who or what they purport to be. Standard mechanisms need to be defined and agreed to enable this information to be exchanged securely and with confidence in a wide variety of environments. The e-Infrastructure Security: Levels of Assurance project (ES-LoA) has investigated current definitions of LoA emerging in the UK at a government level, as well as internationally. It has also surveyed potential users of LoA technology, both identity providers (such as universities, colleges) who have to register people to permit access to services, and service providers (including commercial and JISC-funded services)." This is the final project report.

e-Learning Framework Reference Model for Assessment, by Dr. Yvonne Howard, JISC, November 17, 2007.
From the Summary: "FREMA was funded as an eighteen month project to produce a Service Oriented Reference Model for the Assessment Domain, in particular the objective was to produce some sort of conceptualisation of services working within the domain that could help guide other projects producing services for the emerging JISC e-Learning Framework (since renamed the e-Framework)....The FREMA Project ran for nearly two years, involved a large number of people, and has produced a complex set of outputs. This document reports on the history and evolution of the project, and how the outputs fit into this story....It then presents each of the outputs in detail in individual sections."

Good research on the topic is being done in several disciplines, including human-computer interaction, database management, information retrieval, and artificial intelligence. This two-day workshop will continue momentum towards building a community of researchers doing PIM-related research."

However, we are concerned that this focus on a single participant group prevents the cross-pollination of ideas, needs, and technologies from other related but separate fields. "The long-term sustainability of digital resources is a problem in a world where projects are conceived of as short-term activities and where funders have limited resources to commit beyond initial development phases. Regular updating and upgrading is inevitable, and hardware and software must be replaced regularly if a resource is to grow and thrive. This course will identify the key issues in developing a sustainability plan including what to sustain (resource, people and/or activity), various revenue models and finding your market niche for future funding."
