Managing the 21st Century Academic Library: A Bibliography, by Bernie Sloan in the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
This bibliography pulls together items resulting from Bernie Sloan's "interest in the library of the future, especially regarding the management of the 21st century academic library." He posts this bibliography hoping that it may be useful to those who share an interest in this topic.
"For the most part, this bibliography focuses on academic libraries. The entries in this bibliography generally date from about 1995 forward, about the time that the Internet and the World Wide Web began to impact academic libraries. There are some items that don’t deal specifically with academic libraries, and there are some items that predate 1995. These have been included because [he] found them generally useful."
"This is a work in progress. Most of my focus so far has been on items that are freely available on the Web. I will be adding more print-based items as I begin searching abstracting and indexing databases for other resources." The bibliography is located at <http://www.lis.uiuc.edu/~b-sloan/future.htm>.
Metadata Object Description Schema (MODS), Library of Congress.
June 14, 2002 - "The Library of Congress' Network Development and MARC Standards Office, with interested experts, has developed a schema for a bibliographic element set that may be used for a variety of purposes, and particularly for library applications. As an XML schema, the Metadata Object Description Schema (MODS) is intended to be able to carry selected data from existing MARC 21 records as well as to enable the creation of original resource description records. It includes a subset of MARC fields and uses language-based tags rather than numeric ones, in some cases regrouping elements from the MARC 21 bibliographic format. MODS is expressed using the XML schema language of the World Wide Web Consortium. The standard is maintained by the Network Development and MARC Standards Office of the Library of Congress with input from users."
"MODS, version 1.2, is now available for trial use. It will remain stable for approximately six months beginning June 11, 2002, during which time we invite comments as a result of experimentation."

Serials in the Park: Blazing Diverse Trails in the Information Forest, North American Serials Interest Group (NASIG) 18th Annual Conference, 26 - 29 June 2003, Portland, Oregon, USA. Call for Papers. The deadline for submission is 1 August 2002.
"In the past, librarians, vendors and publishers have played carefully defined roles in the delivery of serial-based information. These roles are rapidly changing as digital platforms become more and more accessible and accepted. Integration and shifting of roles and the effect of globalization are having a very real impact on the serials environment."
"The 2003 Program Planning Committee invites original proposals for pre-conference, plenary, concurrent and workshop sessions that support this year’s conference theme- Serials in the Park: Blazing Diverse Trails in the Information Forest. This year’s theme underscores the variety of formats, emerging technologies, and newly entering as well as continuing providers in the field who partner together to offer opportunities that we commonly know as serials and serials services. Just as parks can grow into beautifully complex forests, these products and services continue to transform shape and purpose; what we define as a serial continues to evolve. As we explore and navigate the forest of serials and their supporting services, the species of trees and the landscape itself are changing before our eyes. Today’s colleagues are often those we do not recognize as the traditional serialist; therefore, we must form synergies as we explore these trails together."
"NASIG's annual conference provides participants with an open and collegial forum to discuss current and relevant issues and to meet colleagues who are involved in various aspects of the serials information chainfrom publication to presentation, from promotion to preservation. The conference is an opportunity for participants to exchange information about serial publications, trends, issues, innovations and other related topics. The conference proceedings are published in both electronic and print formats."

ISMIR 2002 - 3rd International Conference on Music Information Retrieval, 13 - 17 October 2002, Paris, France.
"The annual ISMIR Conference is an international forum for those involved in the tremendous growth of music-related contents available digitally, locally or remotely, through networks."
"This area presents vast challenges for those who need to organize and structure, provide tools to search and retrieve, and use them efficiently: music representation, when it exists, is multi-dimensional and time-dependent; audio instantiations are voluminous objects requiring particular care for storage and transmission while preserving quality; descriptive information about what is musically significant addresses a large spectrum of internal and external characteristics, from acoustic to musicological ones; intellectual property rights about what can be made available and how are complex, involve a variety of individuals and organizations, and vary from country to country."
"All of these concerns are of interest to education, academia, entertainment and industry. This conference thus aims at providing a place for the exchange of news, issues and results, by bringing together researchers and developers, educators and librarians, students and professional users, working in fields that may contribute significantly to this multidisciplinary domain, by presenting original theoretical or practical work in peer-reviewed contributions (papers, posters), serve as a discussion forum (panels), provide in-depth information in specific domains (tutorials), and show current products (exhibit)."
The full preliminary program including the list of selected papers and posters/short papers, as well as the tutorials and panels is now available at <http://ismir2002.ircam.fr/program.html>. For other details and information about the conference, please see <http://ismir2002.ircam.fr/>.

Gaining independence with e-prints archives and OAI, 17 - 19 October 2002, Geneva, Switzerland.
"Online scholarly publishing is revolutionizing scholarly communication. The Open Archives Initiative (OAI), the Budapest Open Access Initiative, and SPARC's "Gaining Independence" document (http://www.arl.org/sparc/GI) are leading the way in this transformation process. There is ample opportunity for others to enter as the momentum gathers pace. At this historical moment, LIBER, SPARC-Europe and CERN Library are organizing a workshop in order to guide individuals and institutions interested in joining the momentum."
"This conference will guide individuals and institutions interested in pursuing open-access solutions for scholarly communication initiatives through the process of conceiving, implementing and maintaining an e-print archive or OAI-compliant repository. Both institutional archives and discipline-based aggregators will be covered; the conference will address equally the technical and organizational aspects of creating and maintaining such repositories. In addition to a general introduction to the open-access concept, there will be presentations of case studies and an extensive discussion section."
"The audience for this conference includes: university administrators, department heads and faculty; academic and scientific society officials and publishing chairs; academic journal editors and editorial board members; publishers; government bureaucrats responsible for innovation in scholarship and publishing; librarians; technical services staff; and others with an interest in open access for scholarly communication."
"Attendees will leave the conference with a solid technical knowledge for creating and maintaining OAI-compliant repositories of scholarly documents. There will also be a focus on the political side of implementation: introducing the concept of a repository into an institution, and negotiating with various groups within the community to assure its success. Attendees will also be exposed to related initiatives aimed at reforming scholarly communications, such as SPARC and the Budapest Open Access Initiative."
"The workshop is sponsored by SPARC (Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition), JISC (Joint Information Systems Committee), OSI (Open Society Institute), and ESF (European Science Foundation)."

National Convention on Library and Information Networking (NACLIN 2002): Bridging the Divide, Delnet, 21 - 24 October 2002, Kochi, Kerala, India.
"The revolution in information technology (IT) has transformed the world in a short time. India also has made a good deal of contribution in this field and has risen to considerable eminence in the world. Yet, in India the impact of information technology has not reached every sphere of activity or every individual. The same is the case with many developing countries."
"The existing IT infrastructure in the developing countries is out of date in most of the cases. With rapid changes taking place in the IT sector, institutions and individuals in the under developed and developing countries cannot afford to buy new hardware and software or upgrade their communication links regularly. Also, access to digital resources is not always free or cheaply available. Therefore those who can afford to buy new infrastructure and can access [the] best digital resources become more advanced and those who can't, are at a disadvantage. It is therefore necessary to see how we can bridge this divide that is shaping between the digitally rich and the digitally poor nations, institutions and individuals. In this context, a national convention on "Bridging the Digital Divide" has thus been considered appropriate for NACLIN 2002."
"The objective of NACLIN 2002 is to focus on the Digital Divide. Participants will have the opportunity to exchange their experiences and share their ideas by interacting with peers. The convention is an ideal professional platform to discuss the various aspects of digitalization of libraries, identification of gaps and views on finding solutions to bridge the gap."
The first two days of this four-day conference are exclusively designed for tutorials conducted by experts. The subsequent two days will focus on the Digital Divide theme, which is divided into the following sub-themes:

First Nordic Conference on Scholarly Communication, 22 - 24 October 2002, Lund (22 - 23 October) and Copenhagen (24 October), Denmark.
"Throughout the world many initiatives and developments that fundamentally affect the conditions for scholarly publication and communication are underway. The Public Library of Science petition has been signed by a large amount of researchers and there is a rapid increase in the number of self-archiving initiatives initiated by researchers. The academic library has a key role to play in relation to these new developments. This means however that we must adapt our services and, in many cases, take upon us the additional roles of publishers and providers of infra-structural and technical solutions for the presentation and preservation of academic content. Publishers are both threatened and thrilled by recent developments and a myriad of new forms of cooperation and collaboration between scholars, libraries, publishers and vendors are emerging."
"In order to discuss, present and analyze the problems and challenges that are arising within scholarly communication Lund University Libraries, Denmark's Electronic Research Library, Danish Research Library Association and Novo Nordisk Library and Information Centre invite scholars, publishers, vendors, editors, librarians and other interested to the First Nordic Conference on Scholarly Communication 22 – 24 October 2002. The conference will take place every second year and intends to be an important contribution to the discussions and to the development within the Nordic countries."

2002 Federated Symposium Event: DOA'02, ODBASE 2002, CoopIS 2002, On the Move to Meaningful Internet Systems and Ubiquitous Computing, 28 October - 1 November 2002, Irvine, California, USA.
"The current and future software needs are towards the development of large and complex Intelligent Networked Information Systems, covering a wide range of issues (such as Data and Web Semantics, Distributed Objects, Web Services, Databases, Workflow, Cooperation, Interoperability, Mobility) as required for the deployment of Internet- and Intranet-based systems in organizations and for e-business. This federated event is unique at providing an opportunity for researchers and practitioners to understand the recent developments in ubiquitous computing," especially as it co-locates three related and complementary conferences. "All three conferences are about the distributed and ubiquity aspects of modern computing systems, and the resulting application-pull created by the Internet and the so-called "Semantic Web". Each of [the three] conferences covers different aspects: theory (i.e. underlying theoretical solutions), conceptual (e.g. technical and conceptual solutions) and applications (e.g. case studies and industrial solutions)."
DOA'02 (Infrastructure)
The Distributed Object Infrastructure and Enabling Technologies
Application: Cooperative systems - Distributed Objects, Distributed Architectures, Internet Computing
"During the DOA'2002 Symposium we want attendees to be able to evaluate existing ORB middleware products; to analyze, and propose solutions to major limitations of existing products; and to indicate promising future research directions for distributed objects. We are particularly interested in the evaluation of existing DOC systems and how they are used to design and to implement large scale industrial distributed applications. We are seeking theoretical as well as practical papers addressing innovative issues related to distributed objects."
ODBASE 2002 (Data Meaning)
Knowledge Bases and Enabling Semantical Use: Design, Tools and Methodologies
Application: Knowledge management - Ontologies, (XML) Databases, Web Semantics
ODBASE 2002 "intends to create a forum to exchange views, ideas and experiences on ontologies and data semantics from different disciplines. A goal of the ODBASE conference is to bring researchers from databases, Semantic Web, and knowledge management together to discuss specific problems and promising approaches to providing more meaning for the growing amount of data on the Internet and in ubiquitous computing. A unique character of the ODBASE conferences is its specialization on data semantic issues for very large ontology and Internet systems, and its strong emphasis on interdisciplinary and practical applicability of systems, tools and methods for supporting semantics in large-scale information systems...We have special interest in papers that bridge traditionally separated areas such as databases, intelligent systems, and knowledge engineering, and papers that address issues of salability in data semantics on the Internet and ubiquitous computing systems."
CoopIS 2002 (Inter/Intra Organization/Institution Application)
Methods for Technology Interaction Within an Organization or Network of Organizations
Application: Web services - Interoperation, Workflow systems, Knowledge management
The CoopIS 2002 theme is "Cooperation in Ubiquitous Computing. We see an increasing number of computing systems and devices connected everywhere. The central issue in this vision is the need for these computing systems and devices to cooperate. We are particularly interested in contributions that relate to the issue of cooperation everywhere."
