This white paper addresses the twin issues of recruitment to the profession and recruitment to academic libraries in particular and documents the topics of discussion, presents questions, and compiles various strategies for enhancing recruitment and retention efforts."

National Academies to Release First Phase of Counterterrorism Study This Summer.
Press Release: May 29, 2002, Washington - "The National Academies expects to complete the first phase of its science and technology counterterrorism study in late June. The study, which is aimed at helping the Bush administration use the nation's scientific and technical resources most effectively to counter potential terrorist threats, is co-chaired by Lewis Branscomb, professor emeritus at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government and Richard Klausner, executive director of global health at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The first phase addresses risks and research needs in key areas of vulnerability: human, animal, and agricultural health systems; toxic chemicals and explosive materials; nuclear and radiological hazards; information technology; transportation and distribution systems; energy systems; cities and fixed infrastructure; people; and interdependent systems. The study also will examine the means for setting technical goals and identify how interagency coordination might be improved."

Metadata Object Description Schema (MODS), Library of Congress.
June 14, 2002 - "The Library of Congress' Network Development and MARC Standards Office, with interested experts, has developed a schema for a bibliographic element set that may be used for a variety of purposes, and particularly for library applications. As an XML schema, the Metadata Object Description Schema (MODS) is intended to be able to carry selected data from existing MARC 21 records as well as to enable the creation of original resource description records. It includes a subset of MARC fields and uses language-based tags rather than numeric ones, in some cases regrouping elements from the MARC 21 bibliographic format. MODS is expressed using the XML schema language of the World Wide Web Consortium. The standard is maintained by the Network Development and MARC Standards Office of the Library of Congress with input from users."
"MODS, version 1.2, is now available for trial use. It will remain stable for approximately six months beginning June 11, 2002, during which time we invite comments as a result of experimentation."

HEDS 2002 Conference: Developing the Digital Collection, 26 June 2002, London, United Kingdom. Conference papers and presentations now available online.
"The 3rd annual HEDS Conference was held at the British Library and attended by over 140 people from all sectors of the library, museum and heritage community in Europe. The focus of the conference was digitisation or digital library developments. The results of the HEDS study on Charging Models for Digital Cultural Heritage were described for the first time in the UK. The METAe project also showed the first prototype of an engine for automated creation of metadata from printed materials."

"INFLIBNET is an autonomous Inter-University Centre of the University Grants Commission (UGC) of India. The annual Digital Resources for the Humanities (DRH) conference is a forum "for all those involved in, and affected by, the digitization of our cultural heritage: the scholar creating or using an electronic resource to further research; the teacher gathering Web resources into an online learning environment; the publisher or broadcaster integrating print or analogue with the digital to reach new audiences; the librarian, curator or archivist wishing to improve both access to and conservation of the digital information that characterizes contemporary culture and scholarship; the computer or information scientist seeking to apply new developments to the creation, exploitation and management of humanities resources. "The focus of ECDL 2002 is on underlying principles, methods, systems and tools to build and make available effective digital libraries to end users. Integration of methods, services, systems and interoperability across different data structures, metadata and components are key issues that will be addressed by ECDL 2002. "The revolution in information technology (IT) has transformed the world in a short time. India also has made a good deal of contribution in this field and has risen to considerable eminence in the world. Yet, in India the impact of information technology has not reached every sphere of activity or every individual. The same is the case with many developing countries."
"The existing IT infrastructure in the developing countries is out of date in most of the cases. With rapid changes taking place in the IT sector, institutions and individuals in the under developed and developing countries cannot afford to buy new hardware and software or upgrade their communication links regularly. Also, access to digital resources is not always free or cheaply available. Therefore those who can afford to buy new infrastructure and can access [the] best digital resources become more advanced and those who can't, are at a disadvantage. It is therefore necessary to see how we can bridge this divide that is shaping between the digitally rich and the digitally poor nations, institutions and individuals. In this context, a national convention on "Bridging the Digital Divide" has thus been considered appropriate for NACLIN 2002."
