New Directions in Social Policy, Four reports from the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA), published in 2004 and 2005. (Downloadable in Word format.)
"MLA has published the findings of important research which has assessed the evidence base for museums, libraries an archives' contribution to key social policy targets including regeneration, health and cultural diversity. The research was launched at a policy seminar, at which Chris Batt announced MLA's commitment to developing Generic Social Outcome measures, mirroring the development of Generic Learning Outcomes' part of the Inspiring Learning for All framework. The Generic Learning Outcomes have proved invaluable in identifying the sector's impact on learners, the new outcomes which will be developed over the coming year aim to demonstrate the sector's contribution to key themes such as healthy communities, social capital and cultural identity."

Report on the DPC Meeting on the large-scale archival storage of digital objects, Digital Preservation Coalition, 2005.
Announced by Maggie Jones, Digital Preservation Coalition: "The DPC Meeting on Mass Storage Systems was held in York on 22nd April. The meeting was open to DPC members only and was intended to be an informal discussion of mass storage systems, structured around the latest DPC Technology Watch report, Large Scale Archival Storage and authored by four members of the DOM team at the British Library. Richard Masters, Sean Martin, Jim Linden, and Roderic Parker led discussion of the decision-making and planning which led to development of their storage system. Data Dictionary for Preservation Metadata: Final Report of the PREMIS Working Group, Copyright 2005 OCLC and RLG, May 2005.
"A comprehensive guide to core metadata for supporting the long-term preservation of digital materials Data Dictionary for Preservation Metadata: Final Report of the PREMIS Working Group is the product of the foremost international consensus-building effort directed at preservation metadata, and it is likely to become the foundation for future work in this area. Ongoing maintenance of the data dictionary and associated XML schemas, along with a forum for implementors, will be provided by the PREMIS maintenance activity. Data Dictionary for Preservation Metadata includes in a single document the PREMIS working group's final report, the data dictionary, and a series of examples illustrating use of the data dictionary. The report, data dictionary, and examples can also be downloaded as three separate documents."

Report of the NISO "Blue Ribbon" Strategic Planning Panel, Presented to the NISO Board of Directors, May 3, 2005.
Announced in NISO Newsline, June 2005 issue: "A Blue Ribbon Panel of eleven experts from industry, academia, and the library community has issued its strategic planning recommendations to NISO. With a charter to evaluate NISO's progress, challenges, and opportunities, the Panel played a central role in a yearlong strategic planning exercise, which NISO's Board of Directors launched in May 2004. Actions recommended by the Panel fall into three primary areas: constituencies and relationships, the changing standards lifecycle, and organizational strategies and business practices."

Request for Proposals for a National Study on User Satisfaction with Access to Government Information and Services at Public Libraries and Public Access Computing Centers, The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). The deadline for proposals to be received at the IMLS is July 20, 2005..
"The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) is seeking proposals for a national research study on how individuals with limited access to Internet resources (those who do not have broadband access from home, work, or school; who choose to access government services and information from locations other than home, work, or school; or who do so through traditional means of access) access federal, state and local government services and whether such users are satisfied with the access provided by public libraries and public access computing centers."
"The study will also examine ways public libraries and public access computing centers provide assistance (e.g., through reference services, tutorials, classes, training) to users seeking federal, state, and local government information and services."
