From the Executive Summary: "This SPEC survey was designed to identify the purposes of ARL member libraries' digitization efforts, the organizational structures these libraries use to manage digital initiatives, whether and how staff have been reassigned to support digitization activities, where funding to sustain digital activities originated and how that funding is allocated, how priorities are determined, whether libraries are outsourcing any digitization work, and how the success of libraries' digital activities has been assessed. The focus of the survey was on the digitization of existing library materials, rather than the creation of born-digital objects."

Rights in the PREMIS Data Model, A Report for the Library of Congress, by Karen Coyle, December 2006.
From an announcement by Rebecca Guenther, Library of Congress: "The Library of Congress, as part of the PREMIS maintenance activity, commissioned Karen Coyle to provide this study to assist the newly established PREMIS Editorial Committee, in consultation with the PREMIS Implementers Group, with its first revision of the data dictionary and schemas. The intention is to improve the specification so that institutions trying to assess their rights to preserve materials in digital formats will be able to provide enough information in their digital repositories to make such assessments about their materials over time. In this study Karen Coyle reviews the landscape of digital rights, analyzes various preservation rights scenarios and the sorts of preservation actions that digital repositories might take, relates copyright law to preservation actions, and provides recommendations for revision where the data dictionary needs expansion."

Review and Analysis of the CLIR Report E-Journal Archiving Metes and Bounds: A Survey of the Landscape, by Maggie Jones, 16 February 2007. (This consultancy was made possible by funding from JISC approved through its JISC Integrated Information Environment Committee.)
"The Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR), together with the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) commissioned a team of authors based at Cornell University to suvery the e-journal preservation landsape and assess leading e-journal archiving initiatives. The final report, e-Journal Archiving Metes and Bounds: A Survey of the Landscape, was published in September 2006, which provides a very timely overview of the status quo regarding e-journal archiving with some practical proposals for future progress. While obviously US in emphasis, the issues and potential solutions are sufficiently global in nature to make this report resonate with research institutions anywhere in the world as they try to grapple with the complexities of licensing access to e-journals, as opposed to owning a physical copy. To fully understand the findings of the survey and its impact for the UK education sector, JISC comissioned a review and analysis of the CLIR report..."

"The goal of this workshop is to bring people from the context and ontology communities together to discuss the approaches they use for information integration from the knowledge representation and reasoning perspective. One perspective views an ontology as an explicit encoding of a domain model that may be shared and reused, while a context may be viewed as an explicit encoding of a domain model that is expected to be local and may contain one party's subjective view of the domain. "The World Wide Web (Web) is in transition; a fundamental evolution of the model which underpins the traditional Web. This new Web, Web (2.0), is a mesh of enhanced semantics, push application widgets, and embedded scripting languages and was developed to pursue the promise of enhanced interactivity. The possible benefits of the Web 2.0 is great but it seems that without timely and prompt action disabled users will be barred from these benefits. Indeed, using sites which such as: Flicker, YouTube, MySpace, Google Maps, and Google Portal will rapidly become 'off-limits' to disabled users. Semantic Web technologies have already shown themselves to be useful in addressing some issues of Web Accessibility. However, this new technology has not yet started to make its way into mainstream applications. Without change, will the benefits of the Semantic Web be lost? Will the promising enhanced interactivity of Web 2.0 technologies become increasingly inaccessible to disabled users? We pose the question: Web 2.0 and the Semantic Web: Hindrance or Opportunity?'"

Science Publishing is rapidly changing due to the introduction of advanced electronic media which give new dimensions to the world wide access to scientific results. Also research in itself is changing with new established areas in E-science which were not possible before. The scholarly communication in the future is thus heavily influenced by the initiatives taken by universities and the information providers of today. Scholars all over the world are engaged in this process. Traditional peer-reviewed publishing is discussed in the light of different forms of Open Access. National programs are set up to support initiatives and actions to find ways to free online access to governmentally funded research."
