Following the survey, publishing program managers at ten institutions participated in semi-structured interviews to delve more deeply into several aspects of service development: the sources and motivations for service launch, the range of publishing services, and relationships with partners. "

Alternative File Formats for Storing Master Images of Digitisation Projects, by Robert Gillesse, Judith Rog, and Astrid Verheusen, National Library of the Netherlands, Research & Development Department. Final Report. March 2008.
From the Introduction to the report: "The study took place in the context of reviewing the Koninlijke Bibliotheek's (KB) storage strategy for digitisation projects. The magnitude of digitisation projects is increasing to such a degree – the estimate is 40 million images and 650 TB in uncompressed data storage by 2011, counting master versions only – that a revision of this strategy is deemed necessary. The central questions are whether all master files of digitisation projects actually have to be stored in the long-term storage system, what the costs are of long-term storage and what the alternatives are besides expensive, uncompressed, high-resolution storage in TIFF file format. This study focuses on the last question. Its objective is to describe alternative file formats besides uncompressed TIFF for storing image master files."

Tracking the reel world: A survey of audiovisual collections in Europe, Edwin Klijn and Yola de Lusenet, European Commission on Preservation and Access, 2008.
"In 2005 TAPE carried out the survey on long-term access to audiovisual collections. Almost 400 responses were received from: museums, libraries, archives, academic institutes, documentation centres, local radio stations, societies, company archives and private collectors all over Europe. 'Tracking the reel world' presents the results of this survey. Based on data collected from hundreds of organizations from all over Europe, most of them archives, libraries, museums (and research) institutes that hold audiovisual recordings as minority collections, this is the first extensive report on preservation and access of sound and moving image materials outside the broadcasting sector and large audiovisual archives. The report shows that a rich diversity of audiovisual materials are held in all types of institutions, but that obstacles in managing them are experienced by many. The study provides estimates on the size of collections, on the presence of specific carriers and their condition. It also presents data on deteriorating materials, obsolete equipment, cataloguing backlogs, and lack of expertise - all problems that are reported frequently."

From the Executive Summary: "The purpose of this document is to present a tool, the Planning Tool for Trusted Electronic Repositories (PLATTER) which provides a basis for a digital repository to plan the development of its goals, objectives and performance targets over the course of its lifetime in a manner which will contribute to the repository establishing trusted status amongst its stakeholders. PLATTER is not in itself an audit or certification tool but is rather designed to complement existing audit and certification tools by providing a framework which will allow new repositories to incorporate the goal of achieving trust into their planning from an early stage. A repository planned using PLATTER will find itself in a strong position when it subsequently comes to apply one of the existing auditing tools to confirm the adequacy of its procedures for maintaining the long term usability of and access to its material."

This collaboration helps libraries, archives, and museums achieve a common understanding of the processes for which they should be responsible. In this project, staff from eight partner institutions participated in copyright investigation interviews between August and September 2007 to share the ways in which their institutions currently obtain copyright permission to provide users with access to high-risk or special collection materials. In the interest of developing a deeper understanding of how and why scholars do what they do to advance their fields as well as their careers, our approach focuses on fine-grained analyses of faculty values and behaviors throughout the scholarly communication lifecycle, including sharing, collaborating, publishing, and engaging with the public. Well into our second year, we have posted a draft interim report describing some of our early results and impressions based on the responses of more than 150 interviewees in the fields of astrophysics, archaeology, biology, economics, history, music, and political science."

Since it was announced on January 11, universities across the country have been gearing up help their faculty comply. "This program aims to establish a national network of learning environments and resources for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education at all levels. The program has four tracks: Pathways projects are expected to provide stewardship for the content and services needed by major communities of learners. Services projects are expected to develop services that support users and resource collection providers that enhance the impact, efficiency, and value of the NSDL network. Targeted Research projects are expected to explore specific topics that have immediate applicability to collections, services, and other aspects of the development of the NSDL network. The NSDL Resource Center will provide collaboration assistance across all projects; undertake strategic partnership development on behalf of projects particularly with respect to non-academic entities; coordinate and, in some cases, perform thematic research and evaluation studies related to the program; synthesize findings across the portfolio; and disseminate findings of the accomplishments of the NSDL program. In FY2008, within the first three tracks the program will accept proposals for large grants in 1) the Pathways track, 2) a new sub-track: Pathways - Stage II, and 3) specific sub-tracks of Services - including a single Technical network services project to provide technical infrastructure support across the NSDL network. In all tracks, except for the NSDL Resource Center, the program will also accept proposals for small grants that extend or enhance results from existing services, collections, or targeted research activity so as to enlarge the user audience for the NSDL network or improve capabilities for the user."
