From the Abstract to the study: "This 2008 ECAR research study is a longitudinal extension of the 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007 ECAR studies of students and information technology. The study is based on quantitative data from a spring 2008 survey of 27,317 freshmen and seniors at 90 four-year institutions and eight two-year institutions; student focus groups that included input from 75 students at four institutions; and analysis of qualitative data from 5,877 written responses to open-ended questions. In addition to studying student ownership, experience, behaviors, preferences, and skills with respect to information technologies, the 2008 study also includes a special focus on student participation in social networking sites."

From an announcement by Shana Kimball, Scholarly Publishing Office University of Michigan Library, about this monograph: "In the late 1990's, researchers and digital library production staff at the University of Michigan collaborated on deploying the Pricing Economic Access to Knowledge project (PEAK), a full-scale production-quality digital access system to enable usage of content from all of Elsevier's (then about 1200) scholarly journals, and at the same time to conduct a field experiment to answer various questions about the interplay between pricing models and usage. The experiment culminated in a lively conference that engaged scholars, library practioners and publishers. This volume captures some of the most interesting and provocative discussions to come out of that conference. PEAK was a ground-breaking effort in its day, and references to the project have continued over time. It raised important questions about the potential for highly functional journal content and new economic models of publishing. In today's context of socially-enabled systems and open-access publishing, the motivating questions of PEAK remain relevant."

Sustainability and Revenue Models for Online Academic Resources: An Ithaka Report, Kevin Guthrie, Rebecca Griffiths, and Nancy Maron, May 2008.
From the Executive Summary to the report: "This paper was commissioned by the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) as the first step in a three-stage process aimed at gaining a more systematic understanding of the mechanisms for pursuing sustainability in not-for-profit projects. It focuses on what we call 'online academic resources' (OARs), which are projects whose primary aim is to make content and scholarly discourse available on the web for research, collaboration, and teaching. This includes scholarly journals and monographs as well as a vast array of new formats that are emerging to disseminate scholarship, such as preprint servers and wikis. It also includes digital collections of primary source materials, datasets, and audio-visual materials that universities, libraries, museums, archives and other cultural and educational institutions are putting online."

"The ACM/IEEE-CS Joint Conference on Digital Libraries (JCDL) is the major international research forum focused on digital libraries and associated technical, practical, and social issues. First International Workshop on Semantic Aspects in Data Mining (SADM'08), 19 December 2008, Pisa, Italy.
"The objective of SADM is to introduce standardized formal methods which can explicitly consider data semantics, background knowledge, or reasoning in the mining process. This knowledge has to be represented/formalized in a knowledge repository, such as ontologies,conceptual schemas, knowledge bases, etc. The main aspect is that this knowledge has to be explicitly incorporated into the KDD process, where the algorithms for data preprocessing,data mining or post-processing make use of this knowledge to improve the KDD process. The key idea is to develop a more general understanding about how to exploit data semantics and background knowledge, and to create standardized procedures for designing more intelligent data mining methods."
