We present a special issue this month, pulled together by a distinguished set of guest editors, consisting of selected papers from the 3rd International Workshop on Mining Scientific Publications (WOSP 2014). The guest editorial, "New Opportunities, Methods and Tools for Mining Scientific Publications", provides a guide to fourteen articles covering a broad set of related topics. This is the second special D-Lib issue in this area, the first being in July/August 2012 covering the same conference, and, as the guest editors point out, there has been significant progress since then, due in no little part to the increase in open access material available for mining.

The changes in both scientific journal and data publication, too slow for some, too fast for others, continues to accelerate. It is too soon to judge the impact of these changes on the conduct of research and, more importantly, the results of resarch, but the potential for a fundamental and dramatic shift is clearly emerging. We are grateful to the guest editors for assembling an impressive collection of articles on one important aspect of this changing landscape and we recommend it to our readers.
