Memory of the World: Towards an Open Source Repository and Preservation System, Recommendations on the Implementation of an Open Source Digital Archival and Preservation System and on Related Software Development, by Kevin Bradley, Junran Lei, and Chris Blackall, published by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, Paris, June 2007.
From the Executive Summary: "This report defines the requirements for a digital archival and preservation system using standard hardware and describes a set of open source software which could used to implement it. There are two aspects of this report that distinguish it from other approaches. One is the complete or holistic approach to digital preservation. The report recognises that a functioning preservation system must consider all aspects of a digital repositories; Ingest, Access, Administration, Data Management, Preservation Planning and Archival Storage, including storage media and management software. Secondly, the report argues that, for simple digital objects, the solution to digital preservation is relatively well understood, and that what is needed are affordable tools, technology and training in using those systems."

XML-based Office Document Standards (TSW0702), by Walter Ditch, JISC: Bristol, UK, August 2007. Copyright © Higher Education Funding Council for England .
"This TechWatch report...proposes that although the UK higher and further education sector has, for a long time, understood the interoperability benefits of open standards, it has been slow to translate this into easily understandable guidelines for implementation at the level of everyday applications such as office document formats. As far as education is concerned, the use of modifiable office document formats has now reached a crucial stage. There is an urgent need for co-ordinated, strategically informed action over the next five years, if the higher education community is to facilitate a cost effective approach to the switch to XML-based office document formats."

DLF Aquifer MODS Guidelines Levels of Adoption, latest update 8/06/07.
"The Digital Library Federation / Aquifer Implementation Guidelines for Shareable MODS Records provide guidance on the use of MODS for metadata intended to be contributed to the DLF Aquifer initiative. The Guidelines, however, are a record-centric view of Aquifer's goals, whereas it is often helpful to set priorities for metadata creation with a user- and use-centric view. This document, the Digital Library Federation Aquifer MODS Guidelines Levels of Adoption, describes five general categories of user functionality that are likely to be supported by following specific recommendations from the Guidelines. It attempts to provide additional guidance to MODS implementers in the planning process by documenting what sorts of functionality is possible when certain elements of the Guidelines are followed."
