131.1 FROM THE EDITOR

tuttle@gibbs.oit.unc.edu

I am happy to announce that there is an easier way to access and retrieve

the back issues of the _Newsletter on Serials Pricing Issues_. In addition

to the archive at listserv@unc.edu, the entire file of the pricing newslet-

ter is available through the Davis Library gopher at the University of

North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The address of the university's gopher is

sunsite.oit.unc.edu. From the main menu select The UNC-Chapel Hill Internet Library,

then item #4 Electronic Journals, and finally item #2 _Newsletter on Seri-

als Pricing Issues_. The issues are grouped by year.

We are in the process of loading the newsletter issues on the library's

World Wide Web, and I will give full instructions for this means of access

when the loading is complete and WAIS indexing is available.

131.2 JOLANDA VON HAGEN DIES DECEMBER 29, 1994

Marcia Tuttle, tuttle@gibbs.oit.unc.edu.

Word has come from family and friends of Jolanda Luise von Hagen (nee Huel-

lein) of her death on December 29, 1994, after a severe illness. Mrs. von

Hagen was for many years head of Springer-Verlag New York and active in

STM. It was during that time that she and I became professional friends. I

always had great respect for Mrs. von Hagen, and over the years I developed

an affection for her. I have missed her professional companionship since

she left the United States.

A memorial service was held on January 9, 1995, at the Cemetery Chapel in

Dossenheim, Germany. Mrs. von Hagen's urn was interred in the Hagen family

grave at Wasbuettel with only closest family and friends in attendance.

The family suggests that donations, if desired, be made to the Children's

Cancer Unit, University Hospital, Heidelberg, Germany, Account Number 345,

Volksbank Meckesheim BLZ 672 633 95.

networks, and the pricing philosophies/policies of the different companies

represented on the panel.

From: Carolyn Kotlas, Institute for Academic Technology, UNC-Chapel Hill,

carolynk.iat@mhs.unc.edu (January 10, 1995):

Thanks for reprinting the article about Andrew Odlyzko's paper. He has a

revised edition now and the retrieval information that was in my article

has changed. I've gotten a couple of email messages from your subscribers

who have had problems getting the paper, so I'm sending you Andrew's mes-

sage about the revision and where it is in case you want to include an

update in a future issue of your newsletter.

>From Andrew Odlyzko, amo@research.att.com:

The latest revision of my essay, "Tragic loss or good riddance? The impend-

ing demise of traditional scholarly journals" is now available. As before,

this revision consists of a condensed and a full version.

The condensed version has appeared in the Notices Amer. Math. Soc., vol. 42

(Jan. 1995), pp. 49-53, and is to be reprinted in Deutsche Math. Ver. Mit-

teilungen and (in a French translation by D. Foata) in Gazette des mathema-

ticiens.

The full version will be published in Intern. J. Human-Computer Studies

(formerly Intern. J. Man-Machine Studies) and reprinted in "Electronic

Publishing Confronts Academia: The Agenda for the Year 2000," Robin P. Peek

and Gregory B. Newby, eds., MIT Press/ASIS monograph, MIT Press, 1995. It

has also been published in the electronic J. Univ. Comp. Sci., pilot issue,

1994 (URL http://hyperg.iicm.tu-graz.ac.at).

I am very grateful to the many correspondents whose corrections and com-

ments have substantially improved this work.

The condensed version differs only slightly from that of July 16, 1994.

The full version has been modified a bit more, but even there, the changes

have not been extensive. The main difference for most readers might be the

availability of PostScript versions of the typeset manuscripts.

>From Laura Gasaway, Law Librarian, UNC-Chapel Hill, unclng@email.unc.edu (December

29, 1994):

I have just received word that the 2d Circuit denied Texaco's petition for

rehearing. This was not a surprise since courts don't like to grant rehear-

ings -- it is sort of an admission that the court made a mistake earlier.

The court amended its earlier opinion slightly. I should receive a copy

soon. I thought you might like to put a short news note in the next issue

of your newsletter.

>From Chris Schneider, Gordon & Breach, christopher.schneider@gbpub.com, in

response to questions on serialst about the publisher's pricing policies as

listed in a chart on its 1995 price list:

Pursuant to our previous communication on serialst, there are two items

that are unfortunately misleading and that we are correcting -- with all

apologies for the confusion, of course.

1. Interlibrary lending -- It is allowed under all vertical columns as long

as it falls within Fair Use.

2. Please disregard the reference to Swiss law. This was errantly included

and is fully retracted.

Thank you and please let me know if you have any more questions.
