This is Paul Ernest in Washington, 1994, at the ICMI conference 'What is research in mathematics education?' The picture was kindly taken by Norma Presmeg, and behind her are a dozen leading international researchers in maths education, with their mouths hanging open. And no, he didn't eat it all!
