LISA III

Approximately 100 librarians, information professionals, and scientists from more than 20 countries attended Library and Information Services in Astronomy III in Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife, Spain in late April (http://www.iac.es/biblio/lisa/). The meeting was designated as a Euroconference by the European Union and was hosted by the Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias. Sessions over three days focused on various aspects of electronic publication, information retrieval methodologies, and information provision and sharing. Abstracts of presentations and posters submitted prior to the conference can be read at: http://www.iac.es/biblio/lisa/indexab.htm. Full papers are expected to be posted at: http://www.eso.org/libraries/lisa3/ by June. The proceedings will be published in paper, possibly as an Astronomical Society of the Pacific conference series if funding can be found.

Many of the attendees participated in post-session field trips to the Teide Observatory (http://www.iac.es/ot/instal/ins.html) on Tenerife and to the Isaac Newton group of telescopes at Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachoson (http://ing.iac.es/Geninfo/geninfo.html) on the island of La Palma.

ASTRONOMY AND ASTROPHYSICS ABSTRACTS

The long term (years) survival of the printed AAA remains in question. Funding is provided by the German state of Baden-Wuerttemberg, and a budget audit agency has recommended that it is not financially cost-effective to continue to produce the printed index. Although most of the references with abstracts are available in the INSPEC database, the cost of that product may preclude many smaller astronomy organizations from obtaining access. A new product, ARIBIB (discussed below) is intended to provide partial coverage of the information in AAA.

ARIBIB

The Astronomisches Rechen-Institut Heidelberg has developed the ARIBIB database (http://www.ari.uni-heidelberg.de/aribib/) of references based on bibliographic data (sans abstracts) from AAA from 1983 to present. The database is still being tested with the intent that it will be made available for free to subscribers of the print AAA. Contact either Markus Demleitner (msdemlei@ari.uni-heidelberg.de) or Gernot Burkhardt (s06@ari.uni-heidelberg.de) for more information.

PUBLICATIONS OF THE ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY OF THE PACIFIC

The electronic version of PASP has been available since January at: http://www.journals.uchicago.edu./PASP/journal/

AMERICAN ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY MEMBERSHIP DIRECTORY

Information on members of the AAS can now be obtained at: http://directory.aas.org.

LOWELL OBSERVATORY WORKSHOP PROCEEDINGS

The Proceedings of the Second Annual Lowell Observatory Fall Workshop on "Solar Analogs: Characteristics and Optimum Candidates" is now available at: http://www.lowell.edu/users/jch/workshop/sa.html

The bound editions of the proceedings will also be available by the middle of May.

EGAL BULLETIN and RGO CLOSURE

Peter Hingley (pdh@ras.org.uk) will be taking over as editor of the EGAL Bulletin due to Ingrid Howard's move to a new job at the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council headquarters as a result of closure of the Royal Greenich Observatory later this year. Robin Catchpole (catchpole@ast.cam.ac.ukwill be in charge of the RGO library.

CARNEGIE ATLAS OF GALAXIES

A reprint edition of the Carnegie Atlas of Galaxies by Allan Sandage and John Bedke has been reissued for $186.00 plus postage. Also, the classic Hubble Atlas of Galaxies and the Revised Shapley-Ames Catalog of Bright Galaxies are both available for $35.00 each.

For more information about the Carnegie Atlas, check out their web site at http://www.ciw.edu (click on Publications, then on Books in Print, then on the Atlas in the list), or email the editor at pcraig@science.pst.ciw.edu or call 202-939-1121.
