Clark" Subject: Acquisitions/collection development split in ALCTS, keeping track of the sections proceedings This is a wonderful way to end the work week. It's beautiful here in Williams- burg with the sun shining and a forecast for mild temps today and for the weekend. It was also nice news to hear on NPR this morning that Mr. Blumberg was convicted of theft yesterday. I thought his insanity plea was an interest- ing (although not unusual) approach -- I wonder if I can use that when a faculty member complains about how long it took to get a title for a class: Gee, I must have been insane to go with "that" vendor! Congratulations on getting ACQNET off the ground. It is a great way to have a forum for various acquisitions issues on a rather informal, yet productive scale. I agree that it is unfortunate that there is an impending split between acquisitions and collection development sections. Whether it truly comes off or not, there is an issue which needs to be raised. Communication of what goes on is of the utmost importance. Whether acq. and coll. dev. folks are in different sections or divisions, there still needs to be a method of conveying the proceedings. NO, CHRISTIAN, I AM NOT SUGGESTING THAT ACQNET TAKE THIS ON. A clearinghouse of some sort would be of use, however. The various division newsletters cannot convey all of the committee reports and actions. If someone has any ideas as to how this might be accomplished, I would be willing to lend a hand, micro, etc. (3) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Fri, 1 Feb 91 17:01 EST From: Jana Stevens Subject: _International Subscription Agents Directory_ (6th ed.) Does anyone know if the 6th edition of the International Subscription Agents Directory (ALA, 5th, 1986) is in making? If it is not, it certainly should be, and it should include 800 numbers, Fax numbers as well as US representative info. An electronic version would be ideal since information could be kept current. No one mentioned acquisitions-cataloging mergers yet. I am surprised. Has anyone tried to incorporate some traditional acq. or cat. functions into one process? Awarness of acqui- sitions and knowledge of acquisititions seem to me to be two different things. I still think that the best education of acquisitions is hands-on experience. I find that educating our library colleagues--particularly those who select is very important. Once they learn how books are distributed and acquired they become much more cooperative. I worked at Blackwell's in Oxford for 6 weeks back in 1980. My library then (the University of Utah) provided me with the time off and Blackwell's provided me with the opportunity to learn about their business. I paid my own fare. It was a terrific experi- ence. I actually worked on a project -- irregular series. Awful stuff but I learned a great deal and it was a terrific experience. ***** END OF FILE ***** END OF FILE ***** END OF FILE ***** END OF FILE *****
