Rockman" Subject: Pre-Pays We are currently reviewing our policy on pre-pays and would appreciate learning how other libraries handle them. Do you have written guidelines or a policy on the type of material which is suitable for prepayment, a dollar ceiling on the amount that can be prepaid, procedures for tracking whether prepaid items have been received, and regulations about who is authorized to approve prepays? I know that this is asking for quite a bit of information, but I suspect that the responses will be helpful to other libraries besides our own. Thanks very much. C.] What most surprised me in doing this study was how much the shape of our monograph collections, which areas we were stressing, affected the costs of the materials even in something as narrowly defined as European history. The Italian serials may cost more than in comparable institutions because we have a lot of ancient history materials, with plates and illustrations that are costly, from that country, whereas for England we have a lot of local histori- cal societies whose publications are not comparably as expensive. It makes me wonder whether cross-institutional monographic price data are as useful as they seem. And with the impact of monograph in series and book continutions on the budget, whether the prices estimates that dealers give for monographs they supply are very helpful either. Vendors need not be named. No person or library or company will be identified in what I write. I just want to mention as many things as possible that vendors might do that acquisitions people need to be wary of. Thanks.
