University of Connecticut Library E-mail: HBAADM03@UCONNVM.BITNET (2) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: September 23, 1991 From: Christian Subject: ACQNET policy on mentioning vendors by name This issue came up very early in ACQNET's life and the current participants (about one tenth of the current membership) decided that we should mention vendors by name. I've had a number of questions on this issue recently which reminded me that most people on ACQNET have not had the benefit of the discus- sion we had so very long ago (actually about 10 months.) That discussion is available in the back file VENDNAME.POS, available from me on demand. More recently the Editorial Board has debated this issue in the context of Richard Jasper's posting dealing with Datamics (Vol. 1, No. 102(5).) I even sought and received an informal opinion from a librarian who also happens to be an attorney. Thus fortified, I allow negative postings about vendors provided that they present verifiable facts. I did not post a contribution even though it related facts because the writer did not have source documents which would prove that the facts were as described. Opinions such as "based on these facts, it seems to me that Otto Bookmonger is a real sleaze bucket," I would delete. (I haven't had one yet, but I'm hoping. I'll enjoy reading it while I'm striking it out.) I delete statements such as "Bookmonger's practice seems to be ..." even though Bookmonger is not charac- terized here as a low life. Items that are complimentary to a vendor I include, unless they are from the vendor. I must say that this hasn't happened yet although I did not a notice by a vendor announcing a seminar which he was to conduct in connection with one of the ALA conferences. I figured this was nothing more than an ad. So this is our current policy. It is subject to change as we gain experience, but I hope that it will never be more restrictive. Openness and honesty are essential ingredients in making ACQNET what it is. We have approval programs with both, both have been sent firm orders. The first, Latin American Bookstore, 204 North Geneva St, Ithaca, NY 14850, supplies Spanish materials from Latin America, Central America, and South America. The second, Libreria Distribuidora & Ediciones Universal, P.O. Box 450353 (Shenandoah St), Miami, FL 33245-0353, supplies materials with Spanish imprints from Spain. We have had no problem communicating with either of the Customer Service departments. The professors for each of these areas seem to be very happy with the quality of the materials as well as the materials themselves. (4) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Fri, 20 Sep 91 10:56:15 EST From: TOVE ROSADO Subject: Vendor: A.L.A.S., Eugene, OR We ordered from A.L.A.S., Eugene, OR, _Archivo Salvador Allende_ (15 vol. set) and prepaid the order. We did receive 6 vols in 2 shipments. However, when we again claimed we realized that the phone had been disconnected. Does anyone have any information on this company? (5) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Fri, 20 Sep 91 09:55:24 EDT From: Judith Niles Subject: Schwartz-Hill Book Company Following up on an earlier question and Mary McLaren's reply in a recent issue, I recently had a visit from a sales representative from Schwartz-Hill Book Company, although his address is in Brentwood, Tennessee. I have been hesitant to try their services without some advice from others who may be actively using them. My impression is that they simply pass the orders along to the publish- ers and that billing would be direct from the publisher. That tends to be confusing for us, so the savings would need to be truly significant to make it worthwhile. (6) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Fri, 20 Sep 91 09:27:56 EDT From: Richard Jasper Subject: East View In response to Rosann Bazirjian's question: Yes, we recently received the letter from East View. Staff are now checking to see whether we in fact receive these titles and, if so, from whom. I will let you know what else we find out, if anything. (7) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Fri, 20 Sep 91 09:50:12 EDT From: Judith Niles Subject: Acquisitions/Collection development, technical services organization Our new organizational structure is somewhat unusual, a key element of it being that there is no longer an "acquisitions" department. The Collection Manage- ment Office incorporates the collection development, vendor selection, bud- get/fund management, and gifts aspects of Acquisitions, while ordering and receiving functions have been incorporated into newly restructured "Monographs" and "Serials" departments in the Division of Technical Services. This restructuring was driven in part by the need to develop more experience and knowledge of acquisitions functions among the technical services librari- ans. That need had become more pronounced with the implementation of an integrated system (NOTIS), and because of the difficulties in recruiting experienced acquisitions librarians. I can provide more information to anyone who is interested. I readily admit that I am greatly enjoying being more directly involved with acquisitions activities again! (8) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Sat, 21 Sep 91 13:44:46 EDT From: Ann Okerson Subject: _Directory of Back Issue Dealers_ NASIG will be publishing this fall Beth's Holley's _Directory of Back Issue Dealers_ as presented in a NASIG Workshop at the 6th conference (Trinity University) in June, 1991. Beth is currently revising her work, which will contain (we think) close to 100 entires and will be indexed. Final marketing/pricing decisions will be made by the Board at an early November meeting, but the cost should be very low, i.e., under $10 a copy. (9) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 23 Sep 1991 10:42 EDT From: "Wanda V. Dole" Subject: Women's studies revisited I MEANT to ask if anyone knew of women's studies approval plans from specialist vendors--i.e., plans to use in addition to a plan from a mainstream domestic vendor. (10) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 23 Sep 91 13:30:58 EDT From: Peggy Johnson Subject: Chinese and Japanese vendors We do a lot of business with Japan Publications Trading Co., all in Roman alphabets. They are very good at securing materials for us, especially technical stuff. They regularly send us status reports on our open orders. If they locate an item for us that is provided to them at no cost, they bill us only for the shipping charge. Books Nippan in California has been a good source for popular Japanese titles. We have used most of the Chinese sources mentioned in ACQNET on an occasional basis. Our primary source is Chinese Materials Center in Taiwan, another quite reliable (but slow) vendor. ******* END OF FILE ****** ACQNET, Vol. 1, No. 107 ****** END OF FILE *******
