Rather than thinking of _LAPT_'s Table of Contents on ACQNET as an advertisement, I view it as a welcome reminder that another issue has been published or is about to be published, and that I should start making friendly inquiries of my colleagues to move the issues along the routing path. Please continue to post the _LAPT_ contents on ACQNET. Even if I don't get to see the issues themselves in a timely manner, at least I can see what I'm missing by viewing the Table of Contents. (3) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: 18 Nov 91 10:25:00 EST From: Adrian Alexander Subject: _LAPT_ contents As an _LAPT_ Editorial Board member, I was puzzled by Susan More's conclusion that listing the contents on ACQNET constitutes advertising. There is nothing either explicit or implicit in this which encourages readers of ACQNET to rush right out and subscribe to the journal. It is merely a service offered to our current subscriber base. Personally, I would love to see similar table of content information from other key professional journals. Aren't libraries providing a similar service to their users via CARL Uncover? (4) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 18 Nov 1991 10:01:51 -0800 (PST) From: Peter Stevens Subject: State Mutual Book & Periodical Service We've had enough problems with this publisher/distributor that we always try to go elsewhere to obtain the title that we want. Usually, we can identify another publisher for titles they sell--usually in the United Kingdom--and obtain them from another source. (5) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 20 Nov 91 16:27 EST From: Marsha Hamilton Subject: State Mutual Book & Periodical Service We have discontinued any business with State Mutual Book and Periodical Service. On more than one occasion, they failed to provide either books or a refund for costly prepaid titles. Our vendors will also not work with them. (6) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 18 Nov 91 10:35:17 PST From: VICKY REICH Subject: ALMS bylaws In response to Carol Chamberlain's request for comments on changes to the ALMS bylaws ("specific changes for consideration include adding references to the purchase, lease, or other methods of acquisition and adding a reference to all formats of library materials"). I support these changes! ALMS serves many purposes, but two important roles of the organization are to provide a sense of community for acquisition professionals and to help us interpret/communicate our professional activities and concerns to our colleagues. I support any changes to the bylaws which help to clarify what acquisitions is all about. As to changing the name of ALMS....I'm willing to consider any possibilities. (8) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 20 Nov 91 16:27 EST From: Marsha Hamilton Subject: Sudanese vendors In reply to Scott Wicks question, it is difficult to get materials from the Sudan but another vendor who works with North African titles is Fawzi Abdulrazzak, Dar Mahjar Books, P.O. Box 56, Cambridge, MA 02238.
