(3) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 25 Nov 1991 10:55:11 HST From: Thelma Diercks Subject: Baker & Taylor Regarding the Baker & Taylor query in ACQNET v. 1 no. 128, I wonder if the following quote from AN2 v. 2 no. 15 is news or history: W.R. Grace & Co. has announced an agreement to sell book-wholesaler Baker & Taylor to a group of B&T executives. The investment group includes Gerald G. Garbacz, who will become president and CEO, and is working with the Carlyle Group, a private merchant bank in Washington. According to the Wall Street Journal (the source of this information) the sale includes B&T Books, B&T Video, and SoftKat. These assets are expected to generate combined revenue of $750 million in annual revenue. Grace has owned Baker and Taylor since 1970. (SOURCE: WSJ, 11/12/91, p. A10, MIDWEST EDITION.) (4) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Thu, 21 Nov 91 09:54:39 EST From: Dennis Carrigan Subject: _LAPT_ contents I would like to say that I, too, favor having the _LAPT_ table of contents on ACQNET, and am puzzled by Susan More's comment that its appearance consti- tutes advertising. On the contrary, I believe it is a valuable service. (5) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: 21 Nov 91 10:07:37 U From: "Joyce Ogburn" Subject: _LAPT_ Contents in Acqnet I also support having _LAPT_ contents on ACQNET. I suspect many ACQNETters don't have easy access to the journal and would appreciate having access to the contents. Librarians are willing to offer extraordinary services to their patrons but then not serve themselves very well. Let's serve ourselves in this case. (6) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Thu, 21 Nov 91 18:38:23 EST From: Ann Okerson Subject: Advertising on the net/LAPT Re: Listing _LAPT_ tables of contents on the net. This was evocative of a situation we had this summer with a scholarly e-journal on the internet/bitnet. The editor proposed to list the books of a particular university press in his e-journal as a service to the field of ancient/classical/biblical studies & history. He asked our discussion list if this constituted advertising and an inconclusive discussion ensued. I queried administrators of Bitnet & Internet. The responses suggested (1) that this is an unclear area but one was safest if each subscriber subscribed with the understanding that this type of quasi-adve- rtising might appear in various issues; (2) and that Bitnet policy specifically forbids advertising; internet probably does. The question arises of precisely what constitutes advertising, BUT there were enough uncertainties that the editors of this particular title decided it was best NOT to list the university press' books, at least in the networked version of their journal. I suggested to Carol Hawks that this was a similar situation in which listing the contents of one such journal would or could look like advertising; that what might be more useful would be to develop a listing of all useful acquisitons articles in whatever journal. This would provide a "level playing field" and would be unambiguous for both _LAPT_ and ACQNET. It is true that in doing so, one would start replicating LISA or _Library Literature_, but presumably the information on the net would be more easily accessible to ACQNET readers and would appear more quickly. (7) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Thu, 21 Nov 91 11:12 EST From: Steve Johnson Subject: State Mutual Book & Periodical Service Clemson University has had experiences similar to those mentioned by other ACQNET users (i.e. very expensive titles, prepayment, non-fulfillment, refusal by vendor to refund money). Virtually all of the State Mutual titles are available from the U.K. at half or less-than-half of the prices quoted by State Mutual. (8) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: 25 Nov 91 09:48:20 U From: Nancy Gibbs Subject: State Mutual Book & Periodical Service Our Monographic Acquisitions Unit does not use this company any longer for the same reasons listed bu others. However our Serials Acquisitions Unit ordered a continuation title in August and received it in exactly three months on a prepaid invoice. (9) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Thu, 21 Nov 91 11:46 EST From: Steve Johsnon Subject: Publishers' special discount catalogs Clemson's acquisitions staff always greet publishers' special discount catalogs with a groan. We have previously had problems with meeting the publishers' deadlines (eg. "orders must be received no later than August 15"), the publish- ers' special requirements (such as using the order form provided in the catalog), the publishers' not honoring the discount (even after we have gone to great lengths to meet ALL of their requirements). We recently had a professor who gleefully submitted a catalog of backlisted philosophy titles from Rowman & Littlefield. If we met all the requirements, we could get a whopping 40% discount on all titles. After some investigation, we discovered that Rowman & Littlefield had recently increased the prices on these same titles by an average of 32% (at least for the 12 titles we wanted). This gives a real discount of only 8%--hardly worth our special efforts. We have a catalog from another publisher who has done the same thing--jacked up the prices and then offered a very attractive (?) 40% discount. (10) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 25 Nov 1991 10:55:11 HST From: Thelma Diercks Subject: Automated systems in ACQNET directory I'd like to record my vote for user identification by automated system. I think it was suggested by Mary McLaren some weeks ago in ACQNET. The Automa- tion Luncheon in Charleston confirmed that this kind of identification would be very useful. As a CARL user I seek out others using the system for consulta- tion. ******* END OF FILE ****** ACQNET, Vol. 1, No. 129 ****** END OF FILE *******
