The discussion topic is "Supervisors and/or Practitioners: Which Are We?" The three panelists are: -- Roxanne Selberg, Head Cataloging Division, University of Washington -- Barbara Dewey, Director, Administrative and Access Services, Universi- ty of Iowa -- Helen Wilkes, Head, Periodicals Dept., University of Georgia. This has always been a lively discussion group who has not always stayed to the topic, thank goodness. We end up with lively dicussions about all sorts of things, including last year one on the use and misuse of e-mail! (3) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 13 Jan 1992 11:36 EST From: Barbara Winters Subject: ALA Code of Ethics: ALCTS/ALMS Input Ethics is a topic we, in this sub-profession of ours, are discussing a lot of late; many of you have been interested in the topic for years. There has also been a good bit in the literature in recent years about the ALA Code of Ethics (Statement on Professional Ethics) itself. You may have read about the hearing scheduled for ALA's midwinter meeting on the Code of Ethics. (This hearing is to be held on Sunday, January 26, from 8:00-10:00 p.m.) You have also read Gay Dannelly's announcement on ACQNET regarding the ALCTS Task Force on Ethics, which will review the code and make recommendations for change appropriate to ALCTS' areas of expertise. What you may not know as yet is that the Acquisition of Library Materials Section (ALMS) of ALCTS also appointed a Task Force to review the statement from an acquisitions perspective and to make recommendations for change to the ALCTS-level Task Force. The ALMS task force is composed of Christian Boissonnas, Barbara Dean, and me. The three of us have held one conference call to help us focus attention on how we ought to proceed. We concluded that we need to do two things: (1) Draft a statement to be included with the ALCTS recommendation that both is specific enough to be of use to acquisitions librarians and is general enough to be accepted by ALA; (2) draft a recommendation that the ALMS Task Force continue to work on a separate Code of Ethics which can, by nature, be more specific to us in the more narrow sense of our professional specialty. Our early thinking is that the former will be a general statement regarding business ethics and fiscal responsibility. We EARNESTLY seek your input into our work. In fact, if you'd like to join our Task Force meeting, please plan to do so on Saturday, 1/25/92, San Antonio Convention Center Table 16. Please also send comments as early as possible either directly to me or to Christian. The earlier we have your input the more time we'll have to incorporate your suggestions and the better product we will be able to develop in our very short timeframe. (4) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 13 Jan 92 12:56:29 PST From: Tina Feick Subject: SISAC message for ACQNET At ALA Midwinter, SISAC (Serials Industry Systems Advisory Committee) will hold demonstration sessions on the draft SISAC invoice implementation of the EDI (electronic data interchange) X12 standard. On an automated system, SISAC Committee members will show an invoice going from a subscription agency through an X12 translator over a VAN (value-added network) to a library's automation system. This brief presentation (involving many of the subscription agents) will also include a discussion of the advantages of EDI and especially SISAC's development of the serials industry's version of the X12 standard. We invite everyone to attend and become aware. Questions, comments and discussion are all welcome. Two sessions will be for librarians (subscription agents, publishers, book vendors, etc.) and two will be for automation system vendors.
