Some stream of consciousness impressions: (1) You're right about ACQNET bringing us together. I must have met at least eight fellow acquisitions folks who I wouldn't have known except for their missives in ACQNET. It's a lot better than chairing a committee, where the audience gets to know you but you don't get to know them... (2) Who would have thought the split of Resources Section would have turned out to be a liberating event for acquisitions librarians? It wasn't exactly the case that we were groaning under the yoke of collection management oppression, of course, but there is something energizing about having a new section, with new committees, and new committee members. I hope we can keep the momentum going. (3) Who went to the Strategic Visions Discussion Group on Friday night? Does anyone know when/where there's likely to be a write-up? I'm very pleased that something like this is going on. As I've said before, unless we start articulating our vision of the future it won't be what we want it to be. (4) Speaking of the future, I hope you all have read Ross Atkinson's "The Acquisitions Librarian as Change Agent in the Transition to the Electronic Library," appearing in the current (vol. 36, no. 1, January 1992) issue of _LIBRARY RESOURCES & TECHNICAL SERVICES_. I think it will become our guide for the 1990s in the way seminal articles sometimes do. I've suggested to Barbara Winters, chair of the new ALCTS Electronic Publications Discussion Group, that we ought to have an open forum cum public debate on the article in San Francisco. (5) I was pleased to hear Dick Rowe, at Saturday morning's Faxon breakfast, acknowledge however briefly that there are proprietary obstacles to be navigated along the road to the electronic future. At some point we need to get much better at identifying and beginning to take a stand on these; I wonder how many have already been resolved without any discussion but simply because key players have decided to approach them a particular way. (6) On the other hand, it warms my heart to see academic librarians and people from Faxon, Blackwell's, Ebsco, Readmore, John Wiley, et al., working together on X12, the SISAC standard for electronic data interchange. Their presentations, by the way, at San Antonio on X12, SISAC and EDI were superlative BI on a complicated topic. I can hardly wait for San Francisco!
