Dear Sir: The American consul (The Honorable Antonio Borges) of Madeira, Portugal wants to establish an English Language Library for the use of Americans living or visiting Madeira, and also for the Portuguese residing in Madeira who read English. In a few years Madeira will have a university and students will be encouraged to use this library. Mr. Borges has found space for the library in the capital city of Funchal. The library will need all kinds of books - typically found in a good library. Books should be neatly packed and properly identified (or labeled). The library organization in Madeira is willing to pay the shipping cost and books should be sent to the following address: Mr. Antonio Borges, U.S. Consul United States Consulate Funchal Madeira, Portugal May I respectfully suggest you forward this letter to your head librarian. If you librarian can participate in this program, please contact the American Consul. If you wish, all books contributed can have donor identified on the inside cover. Needless to say, this effort to start an English Language Library has the enthusiastic support of the American Ambassador in Lisbon, Portugal, Mr. Everett Ellis Briggs, and the officials of the Portuguese government. Again, may I suggest that rather than discard any excess books, please send them to Madeira where it will be gratefully accepted. Sincerely, Josepah E. Fernandes Donors should let us know in advance the forecast cost of shipment together with a list of intended books so that we may clarify that there are no future duplications as well as find the funds necessary to cover the costs. We have two questions for the readers of ACQNET: 1. How do you use your automated system to get collection development information? 2. What kind of information do you collect? Please respond directly to me. (4) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 31 Mar 92 08:54:22 EST From: Pamela M. Rose Subject: Budget formulae The subject of formulas for distribution of funds among monographs and serials has come up again. As one who has worked in only one library and one depart- ment all of her career, I'm curious to know exactly what formulae other institutions use, and how that particular version is arrived at. We do not use a "formula", rather we constantly evaluate our needs based on past use, current and expected programs in the schools that we serve, and the expected dollars in the next fiscal year. For subscriptions and continuation orders, we use the previous years' actual expenditures, allow for new orders entered, add an inflation factor, review the file for less used/needed items we might cancel, and arrive at a budget amount. It seems to me that locking yourself into a formula might be counterproductive.
