So far our faculty and librarians have offered no objection to not ordering these items. (3) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 21 Apr 92 10:09:06 EDT From: Pamela Rose Subject: Starting with a new vendor, rush orders I just had an interesting experience with a vendor, and thought I'd share it with ACQNET readers. I had a need for a "rush" item which (as usual in the medical library field) the patron needed yesterday. My usual procedure is to use the 800 numbers of the vendors I have on file to check stock, and have the first vendor who has stock ship and bill overnight. All of the vendors I keep on file have solicited our business, and assure us that they are all service oriented. In this case, I phone three vendors who were out of stock, and the fourth vendor has numerous copies in stock. However, because we do not have a current account with them, I was told it would take at least a day to set up an account, another day to process the book, so I wouldn't receive the book even with overnight express until Friday. After expressing my surprise that they couldn't provide such service, I suggested that I would try to solicit the book elsewhere this time, but they might want to set up an account anyway, so that the next time this wouldn't happen. I was discouraged from even doing that. The vendor informed me they didn't like to set up accounts unless they had an order. Naturally, I'm not likely to look favorably on this vendor in the future, and am surprised that in this day of shrinking budgets, reduced purchasing, and increased competition for services that a vendor can afford this kind of attitude. I'm reluctant to name the vendor in this forum, not wishing to tarnish their reputation needlessly. This could have been a problem with the individual rep having a bad day, etc. and if I had the time I'd pursue it with higher officials. However, it probably isn't worth if for my operation. (4) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon 20 Apr 1992 17:08:55 From: Dan Tonkery Subject: Vendors on ACQNET I hope the ACQNET will continue to be accessible to commercial suppliers or vendors. Many of the vendors are on the system and while most of us do not answer topics, there is good information on the system. As a vendor I am cautious in responding to most topics as I want to avoid making any comment that sounds like a sales presentation. On the other hand, the library staff should understand that vendors do read the E-mail on many of the systems. We make copies for our sales staff and internal operations staff. We feel that our services can be improved by knowing what is going on in the community. Reading the E-mail is just a portion of our information gathering process. As vendors we subscribe to many library journals. Reading the professional literature in print or in electronic form is important. Many times the E-mail information is more important than the professional literature. Keep the access to the E-mail open and available to everyone. Cramer Subject: Automated acquisitions systems We are beginning the search for a replacement acquisitions and fund accounting system. I would like to talk with ACQNET viewers who may have a system (and you can't count Innovacq) which can handle a materials budget of approximately five million dollars, is a separate/stand alone product (with hopefully interface potential). Mack Subject: U.S. Statistics' _FedStat_ on CD-ROM Can anyone give me some advice? In August 1989, we ordered (and prepaid) _FedStat_, a CD-ROM produced by U.S. Statistics in Alexandria, Va. We have never received the product, despite repeated phone calls and letters. Phone messages are taken by an answering machine, but the calls are never returned. After such a long period of time, I have become increasingly impatient and disgusted with such poor customer service, but what are my alternatives at this point? I want the product or our money back -- and unfortunately it seems that I will get neither! Any pointers (electronic cattle prods?) will be appreciated.
