Hunter (James Cook University) Subject: Australian serials vendors James Cook University Library mainly uses 2 Australian vendors for Australian serials. We use overseas vendors for overseas-published serial titles: Ebsco Australia Subscription Services 35 Mitchell Street North Sydney, N.S.W. 2060 Australia D.A. Book (Aust. ) Pty. Ltd. P.O.Box 163 Mitcham, Victoria 3132 Australia Australian serials seem to be a mine field in general, and I doubt that anyone does it too well. We order quite a number of non-commercial titles directly from their publishers because of this. Ebsco Australia is the Australian branch of the American version, and formed c. 10 years ago by taking over the serials side of James Bennett Library Services. DA Books has grown from distribution of Elsevier/Kluwer, etc. European mono- graphs and serials to a full supplier of all types of monographs and serials. I hope this helps. There are others in the market, but these 2 are the main academic serial suppliers, I think. I'd be happy to follow up on anything else, or ask our Serials librarian to comment. Blackwell in Oxford. From the beginning they have given us their usual excellent service, and we couldn't be happier. Wilson checklists We have faithfully completed these checklists from Wilson, as their price is based on the number of titles subscribed to be covered by a particular index (I do not know the exact formula they use). We have felt it is our obligation to have an accurate list with Wilson, so that we are being priced fairly. As far as cost increases go, a lot depends on the level of collection develop- ment or "downsizing" you have done. We have seen minimal increases in certain areas due to the various cancellation projects undertaken in the past six years. Of course, if your library has made an effort to improve its collection in the area of education, you could experience a large increase. However, I should caution you, that failure to complete the checklist could disrupt your service. I have had some protracted dealings with Wilson trying to straighten out a year old problem with a two copy order to one of their indexes. It all began when only one checklist arrived and problems arose. Therefore, I would recommend careful scrutiny of any checklists you receive from Wilson. And that includes more than just the list of titles, account numbers, etc. are also important to verify. Collection development is usually interested in how much coverage we have of a particular index, so I've usually forwarded them a copy when the checklist is complete. In sum, I feel we have an obligation to provide Wilson with an honest and accurate list of the currently received titles, so they can bill us a fair price. It's the only way you can be sure the price is as fair as possible (within the confines of Wilson's pricing policy). (5) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 29 Jul 92 07:57:30 CDT From: October Ivins (Louisiana State University) Subject: H.W. Wilson checklists This is long standing Wilson practice and has some significant benefits which offset the chore aspect. This is their version of budget-based pricing, which tries to assess the utility your institution receives from a product in pricing. I like it; if you are an ARL library with a marginal art program, for instance, you would get a break on the Art Index. It also permits you to do separate surveys for copies in other locations, so you can pay "full price" for the central library copy and substantially less for a branch library location. It is my understanding that Wilson will not enter a new subscription until the survey is done, meaning some time in the past and then at periodic intervals your library has completed these surveys. I deal with this situation by keeping a file of Wilson surveys and updating them as needed. Unless your collection has changed substantially in the surveyed area, I doubt your pricing category will change. I don't have direct experience with Wilson pricing in CD ROM products yet, but my gurus at Ohio State (Trisha Davis and Carol Hawks) indicate that Wilson is similarly progressive in its network and LAN contracts. So, this is a chore that seems to come around every 4 years or so for each index, but hey-- it's not a bug, it's a feature!
