Subject: Jazz Heritage, Ocean, NJ Has anyone ever heard of a sound recordings publisher named Jazz Heritage or Mapleshade in Ocean, New Jersey? We have been trying to obtain an album that they published, but our regular recordings vendor said that we had to order directly from the publisher. We tried doing that, but so far haven't received any response to our order or follow up claims. I'd appreciate an address or phone number for this publisher if anyone has it. If so, do you have a flat fee or do you have a breakdown of charges? (4) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 12 Aug 92 13:53:53 EDT From: Scott Wicks (Cornell Univ.) Subject: Amer. Genealogical Lending Lib, Scholarly Resources I have a request to purchase the _1920 U.S. Federal Census_ which has been released by the National Archives. The title (consisting of some 2,076 rolls) is priced at $17.50 (silver) from the AGLL or $23.00 per roll from Scholarly Resources. Would anyone have experience as to the quality of AGLL micro- formats? It will be quite a deal to be able to save $11,000 if their quality is no different from that of Scholarly Resources. (5) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 11 Aug 92 16:20:01 CDT From: Doug DeLong (Illinois State Univ.) Subject: ABBE Publishers Association, Washington, DC Emily Shen, University of Texas at Arlington, raised a question regarding ABBE Publishers Association. We have ordered one book from them in the last 4 years; in November 1988 we prepaid for one title and received the book in mid January 1989. As far as I can determine we did not have to claim. (6) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 11 Aug 92 12:08 EDT From: Marsha Hamilton (Ohio State Univ.) Subject: ABBE Publications In reply to Emily's question, we placed ABBE Publishers Association of Washington, DC, on our list of excluded publishers for our domestic approval plan. Items received were not of acceptable quality. We also try not to firm order their publications for the same reason so I can't comment on their fulfillment rates. (7) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Fri, 14 Aug 92 10:47:25 -0400 From: Marcie Kingsley (Western Michigan Univ.) Subject: Telemarketing I am responding to Judith Wann's question about being asked for her birthdate by a telemarketer. I'd guess that the caller did not really even know why he was supposed to be asking for a birthdate -- probably just going by instruc- tions, since these aren't necessarily very senior people doing telemarketing. I would say it was probably in order to obtain demographic marketing data, just as zip codes are so valuable to marketeers. A form I was just filling out for a library institutional membership to ASM (American Society for Metals) requires an individual's name to be provided as a primary contact -- I was willing to put my name down, but then I saw that it asked for my birthdate! Phooey with that. (I should have put down the library's birthdate since this is an institutional membership -- how about April 11, 1893?) (8) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Fri, 14 Aug 92 10:47:25 -0400 From: Marcie Kingsley (Western Michigan Univ.) Subject: Acquisitions librarians salary survey I am going to attempt to get a salary adjustment based on a "market study," something which the library Dean and the university Provost will consider. If your position is somewhat close to mine as described below, will ACQNET subscribers be willing to let me know some salaries? Since presumably no one want to air this for all of ACQNET, please reply to me at KINGSLEY@gw.wmich.edu or by calling me at (616) 387-5147. Even if you want to be anonymous, just the figures would be a little help, but of course I really want to be able to say which institutions are paying more. (Of course, if you are not very happy with your own salary, I probably don't want to include any such information in my report!). The position is Head of Acquisitions and Serials (which includes Bindery, a major public service point, and database maintenance on serials holdings as well as all the usual monographic and serials acquisitions activities). The materials budget is $ 1.6 million; I supervise a staff of 12, all non-profes- sionals. My university has 27,000 students. I have 22 years of professional experience. If your position is even roughly similar, I would be grateful to hear from you.
