Subject: Automated systems migration Has anybody done their acquisitions system-to-system migration in mid-fiscal year? How about it folks? Has anybody managed two accounting systems at once? Any luck with serials acquisitions record-tape transfers? Let's hear it. Thanks. (2)------------------------------------------------------------------------ Date: Fri, 16 Apr 93 13:43:37 EST From: Tove Rosado (Univ. of Connecticut) Subject: Staff productivity and morale Although ACQNET has moved on to other hot topics, I want to share my thoughts on staff productivity and morale. At UCONN we have very good salaries and benefits (due to collective bargaining) and have up to now only suffered one deferred pay increase. However, we have lost about half of the acquisitions staff in the last 5 years. Now we process our receipts on a daily basis and have no backlogs. We have excellent productivity, which I attribute to a good staff, in addition to: --good training in their job assignment --cross training and opportunity to learn other dept. tasks --understanding of the goals of the Acquisitions Department and the overall goal of the Library (to get the book on the shelf) --opportunity for funding (Union and Library funds) to go to regional and national library related meetings --some involvement in the decision making relating to their duties. Staff take pride in working in a department that is perceived by the rest of the organization as being organized and efficient, and they also under- stand the importance of depending upon each other. Since we have lost lots of staff the last couple of years, we have fewer parties and distractions, but nobody seems to miss them much. I think most of us are happy to have a good job and try to gain as much expertise in the field to be prepared for the constantly changing working place. I am happy to have ACQNET as a resource! We have recently been notified that the company is now bankrupt and their assets have been taken over by Iris B. Vogler. Vogler has stated that they are willing to continue to fill the outstanding orders and we will most likely send new orders to them. We would like your help in suggesting other suppliers that you have found to be reliable just in case things do not work out. Duncan Subject: Bids for vendors, particularly Texas State Junior Colleges Sender: "AUTOCAT: Library cataloging and authorities discussion group" Please excuse my using Autocat for non-cataloging questions. I do not know the address of the Acquisitions Interest Group. I am hoping that the people on Autocat will be able to answer my questions or send my message on to someone who can. Thanks and apologies in advance. We are a Texas junior college. Due to what we feel are low discount rates we are interested in getting new bids for our book jobber. 1--research shows us that some Texas STATE junior colleges do not have to go out on bid for purchasing books. Please let us know how you get away with not obeying state purchase laws! Our purchasing office says if we can show them in writing where junior college libraries are exempt they will not force us to get bids & contracts. So please list your source. 2--If you do have to go out on bid and you feel you have a pretty good bid/contract that results in good service and nice discounts--we would love to see your bid and use parts of it in our bid. Please mail me or fax me your bid. Many many thanks to all who read this, respond to this or don't flame it! Thanks and have a good weekend. Did I mention we need this as of yesterday? Lucy E.
