They result from the changing computing environment at Cornell, and from the fact that ACQNET has grown too large to continue as it is now. As many institutions, Cornell is shifting from a mainframe to a distributed computing environment. The machine on which ACQNET now resides is sched- uled to shut down in 1994. In preparation for that event services are being phased out and moved to other machines. Among them is electronic mail service. As you know, ACQNET is not managed by a listserv. There are several reasons for this, not the least of which is that listserv software is not available on the Cornell mainframes. So I have been sending ACQNET using plain, vanilla, electronic mail, an option which I will no longer have on this machine in a few months. Among the alternatives available to me are e-mail and listserv facilities on Unix-based machines, and here is where the size of ACQNET becomes important. The distribution list now exceeds 740 nodes. I maintain it manually, and it has become too cumbersome a job. It takes away from the time available for editorial work. Tonight, for example, it took me almost 60 minutes to add a new subscriber, remove an old one, and figure out what to do about 6 copies of the last issue which were returned undelivered for a variety of reasons. This was enough time that I won't be able to put together the issue which should go out tonight. I spend more time updating directory information than I should, than it deserves given the little interest in them that was revealed by the survey Rosann Bazirjian did last winter. Not only do I need to streamline the distribution process, I also need to spend less time managing individual subscriber records. Simply moving from one e-mail to another doesn't seem very helpful. As far as the distribution and subscription management processes are concerned the listserv option is the way to go. It will not be necessary for you to do anything. If things go smoothly the only change you'll notice is that ACQNET will be coming from a different address. From that point on you will be able to subscribe and un-subscribe on your own. Archiving will not change. I will continue to archive files on the same machine where they are now and you will be able to retrieve them via anonymous FTP just as you do now. I will, however, stop producing directories and an index. The demand for them simply doesn't justify the effort that I put in them. If any of you feels strongly that they should continue, I am willing to help you maintain them for the community by channeling information to you and storing and making the final products available. While I can no longer do it alone, I am willing to help someone else to keep these products current. If you are interested drop me a line and we can talk about it, or see me at ALA. Barring unforeseen complications, I am planning to implement the changes as soon as we come back from ALA. Please feel free to comment upon them.
