She was one of two winners of the David H. Clift Scholarship. There is a big picture of her accepting her award on page 624. Check it out. Marylou, we congratulate you. You work full-time, are going to school as well, and help with ACQNET. You have earned that scholarship. (3)------------------------------------------------------------------------ From: Christian Subject: New ACQNET subscribers Date: Thu, 05 Aug 93 21:56:27 EDT Between the time that I returned from vacation yesterday and tonight, 31 people became new subscribers to ACQNET. This is unprecedented for two reasons. One, never before have so many people joined in such a short period. Two, almost all of them used the same incorrect syntax and tried to subscribe from ACQNET-L@CORNELL.EDU rather than LISTSERV@CORNELL.EDU. This suggests to me that somewhere recently, at a professional meeting or in a newsletter, someone talked or wrote about ACQNET and transmitted incorrect information about how to subscribe. If you subscribed in the last week or so, can you please tell me how you received your instruction to subscribe? Perhaps I can make it so that future subscribers have correct information. Please reply to me at my e- mail address, and not to ACQNET. (4)------------------------------------------------------------------------ From: Karen Gargille (UCSD) Subject: "Arrivederci, Baby!" Date: Wed, 14 Jul 1993 19:35:05 -0400 "Arrivederci, Baby!" That's what the Italian vendor, Libreria Mario Miliano, said after we pre-paid several pricey orders. BUYER BEWARE - DO NOT USE THIS VENDOR - I repeat - THIS VENDOR IS A DUD!!! (5)------------------------------------------------------------------------ From: Gerald Gordon (Radford University) Subject: _Variety's video directory plus_ Date: Mon, 19 Jul 93 19:11:58 EDT Does anyone subscribe to _Variety's Video Directory Plus_, a CD-ROM database published by R.R. Bowker? It seems to be an "in print" and reviews source for video recordings, with over 88,000 entries. How does it rate as a verification source in acquisitions, particularly for educational videos? Also if you have an opinion as to its value as a resource in cataloging or reference, I would appreciate knowing it. (6)------------------------------------------------------------------------ From: Steve Johnson (Clemson University Subject: Book sales Date: Wed, 21 Jul 1993 11:46:33 -0400 I would like to initiate a discussion on book sales. I have found that acquisitions librarians are frequently involved in these, sometimes directly, sometimes indirectly. But I have seen no electronic discussion on the subject. At Clemson University (a state institution) we have opted to accept all donations on behalf of the university foundation. This allows us to sell gifts which are not added to the collection. We have held two book sales, and received a very good response from the campus and local community. Although pleased with the results, we suspect there are ways we could improve the sales and increase the profitability. I have many questions, but in the interest of keeping this brief, I would like to ask just a few in order to generate a response and develop a Book Sale Special Interest Group (to be known as the BS SIG). Even if you don't think you have much to say, please respond so I can find out who's involved with book sales. Here are my questions: What department/group is responsible for conducting the book sale? (if you aren't, who is, and what is their phone number?) -- How many books were sold at your last sale? -- How were the books organized at the sale? -- How many days did it run? -- How were the books priced? -- About what portion of the work done on the sale was done by volunteers, i.e., not library staff)? -- Did you have some kind of preview at which there was an entrance or membership fee? If you respond directly to me, please be sure to include your name, address, and phone in the response. Thank you. (7)------------------------------------------------------------------------ From: Kristina Starkus (Marquette University) Subject: Downloading BNA records Date: Fri, 23 Jul 1993 09:49:52 -0500 (CDT) Does anyone have experience downloading full records from BNA into their online catalog at point of order? If so, what is the quality of their records? What problems have you run into? How did you work with cataloging staff to implement this procedure? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Please reply directly to me and I will summarize for the group at a later date. ****** END OF FILE ****** ACQNET, Vol. 3, No. 62 ****** END OF FILE ******
