We currently download records from OCLC to our acquisitions system. We don't make any changes except to change the ISBN if the book we want is a paperback and the ISBN is for the hardback. We use the vendor notes to indicate which volumes of a work we want, if we want only the latest copy, the paperback,or if there is something else we want the vendor to know about the book. (3)------------------------------------------------------------------------ From: Richard Jasper (Emory University) Subject: Aux Amateurs de Livres, Edna Laughrey Date: Thu, 26 Aug 1993 12:24:56 -0400 (EDT) In case you haven't heard, Aux Amateurs de Livres International, the Paris- based vendor of French language materials, now has a North American office, headed by Edna Laughrey, formerly of Faxon and up until 1988 the long-time head of Acquisitions at the University of Michigan Library. Edna reports the following: "We started the North American office on August 1 and I have really enjoyed being back in touch with academic librarians. I'm continuing to be the half-time director of the Huron Valley Library System [Note: HVLS is a library service consortium based in Ann Arbor.--rpj] When you add my assignment for ad management for _Against the Grain_ you'll understand that I am *very* busy! This is fun!" Edna is working on establishing an e-mail connection. In the meantime, she may be reached at the following address: 291 Tower Drive, Saline, MI 48176 TEL: 313-429-1029 FAX: 313-429-1711 The advertisement from Aux Amateurs de Livres announcing the North American office will appear in the September issue of _Against the Grain_. If I sound pretty tickled, it's because I am. Edna was my first boss out of library school and I can't think of a better place to have started one's career than in the Acquisitions Department at the University of Michigan Library. She's been a fixture for years in the ALA booths of foreign vendors and I think it's fabulous that she will now be working with Gilles and Sylvia de la Rochefoucauld for Aux Amateurs de Livres. (4)------------------------------------------------------------------------ From: Nancy Slight-Gibney (University of Oregon) Subject: Ordering productivity Date: Thu, 26 Aug 1993 17:54:45 -0400 At the University of Oregon we use an Innopac system and export bibliographic and order records from OCLC. Almost all of the order creation steps take place at the OCLC terminal. The ordering staff have other duties, but in general we can expect 15 to 20 order records created per OCLC terminal hour. This standard has remained pretty stable over time. There is one staff member who produces about double the average, but it would be impossible to hold others to his standard. The variables that can effect productivity include language of publication, OCLC hit rate, completeness of the order request, handwriting of the requestor, percentage of duplication, etc. (5)------------------------------------------------------------------------ From: Judy Evans (Australian National University) Subject: Collets Book Service Date: Fri, 27 Aug 1993 01:33:14 -0400 Regarding the query about Collets current status (ACQNET 3:68.3), there is an item in _The Bookseller_ of 30th July 1993 which outlines the difficulties the Company has been having as a result of the changed political environment in Eastern Europe. A team of administrators has been put in place to attempt to 'turn the company around' and enable it to survive after the significant losses they have experienced in the last 2 years. 43 of the staff of 61 are being made redundant, with only 18 staff to stay on. (6)------------------------------------------------------------------------ From: E. Gaele Gillespie (University of Kansas) Subject: Collet's Book Service Date: Thu, 26 Aug 1993 20:08:32 -0400 In answer to Linda Connor's question about what's happening with Collet's: We've used Collet's for years, too. One of our Slavic bibliographers sent me information concerning Collet's from the SLAVS discussion list (SLAVS@library.Berkeley.edu). Evidently, Collet's has gone into some form of receivership which will allow them to continue trading (including accepting orders and subscription renewals) until late September under some form of legally-appointed supervision. At the end of that period a decision about the firm's future will have to be made. Gregory Walker (Bodleian Library, Oxford) and Ray Scrivens (Cambridge University Library) are preparing for the possibility that Collet's MAY cease trading. When I read this information, I called two of our foreign vendors to see what they had heard. According to these vendors, Collet's is experiencing some problems, is working towards some financial restructuring, but is still functioning. These vendors received. letters from Collet's verifying that they've paid all customers' invoices and have confirmed all subscriptions. These vendors are also scouting out other possibilities just to be on the safe side should Collet's cease to function. BEWARE of a letter that you might receive from East View Publications, a Minnesota concern, who somehow obtained a list of Collet's customers and is sending out a letter saying that Collet's is bankrupt, which is not true, at least not yet. And I for one hope Collet's doesn't go belly up, as they have been a reliable source for materials from Cuba, the former Soviet block countries, and Eastern Europe that were difficult to obtain. (7)------------------------------------------------------------------------ From: Anita Hi (Carleton University) Subject: Collets Book Service Date: Tue, 31 Aug 1993 15:31:17 -0400 You may want to refer to two articles which appeared in _Publishers Weekly_, August 16 (p. 18) and _The Bookseller_, July 30. According to the article in _Publishers Weekly_, Collets "has been forced to call in the receivers. More than 40 of the 61 staff members have been laid off already. And a firm of accountants has taken over company business". (8)------------------------------------------------------------------------ From: Anita Hi (Carleton University) Subject: Russian approval vendors Date: Tue, 31 Aug 1993 15:31:17 -0400 Can anyone recommend a Russian book dealer who can handle an approval plan, standing orders, monographic and serial orders? Please reply to my personal mailbox if you feel that it is more appropriate. ****** END OF FILE ****** ACQNET, Vol. 3, No. 69 ****** END OF FILE ******
