Subject: Transition of Acqnet Editor Date: Sun, 8 May 1994 The transition from Cornell to Appalachian State is happening and some of you may have noticed. I have been working with Christian in the last few weeks to learn how to compose issues. Recently we were successful in setting up to the listserve software at Appalachian and we copied over the subscriber list. One issue of ACQNET, 4:26, was actually sent from Appstate; others will be as well in the coming weeks. The Cornell version of ACQNET is still active but Christian was called away suddenly last week and so this was my chance to "test drive" ACQNET from Appalachian. PLEASE NOTE: if you have sent messages to Christian since Thursday, May 5, they may be sitting in his accounts waiting for action; he'll be back next week. In the next couple of weeks we'll finish the cutover, and ACQNET will happen from Appalachian exclusively. I want to thank Terry Combs, ASU's "Postmaster" for being so helpful to both Christian and I during this transition; without Terry, we wouldn't being doing this! If you have any questions about this transition, please contact me at COOKEI@conrad.appstate.edu, or 704-262-2786. (2)---------------------------------------------------------------- ED. NOTE: While you've probably seen this job posting elsewhere (there were other positions described along with this one, not included here), I would encourage any comment about the description -- I think this is indicative of some trends previously discussed on ACQNET -- how does such a structure impact on Acqusitions work as we know it? One major resource is UMI's Books on Demand program. UMI can provide copies of over 130,000 OP titles, reprinted xerographically on demand. The titles are predominantly non-fiction. UMI produces a guide on fiche that lists all available titles (listed alphabetically, by author's name). To request a free copy, librarians may call UMI toll free at 1-800-521-0600, ext. 3736. A number of printed catalogs are also available, by subject. Inquire at the same number. Many titles many also be found in Bowker's Books in Print resources (print and electronic). (4)---------------------------------------------------------------- Sender: "Henry J. DuBois" (CA State Univ., Long Beach) Subject: Multimedia Collections Date: Wed, 4 May 1994 19:38:22 -0400 CSULB Library has begun to collect commercial MPC (Windows/DOS based) multimedia products such as the MICROSOFT BOOKSHELF, MICROSOFT MULTIMEDIA MOZART, etc. I would like to know how other libraries are dealing with these materials: 1. Are you calling them "multimedia" for purposes of your catalog or some other name? 2. Are you shelving/filing them in accession number order or are you assigning LC call numbers? 3. Are they housed in your computer lab, media center, or reference area? Or could they be accommodated in any one depending upon content, i.e. the COMPTON'S MULTIMEDIA ENCYCLOPEDIA in reference and with more subject-specific titles in the Media Center? 4. Do you collect BOTH MPC and Macintosh multimedia CD-ROM's? Are they interfiled? If so, how are they distinguished in cataloging? 5. Do you have any older multimedia products which require additional software and hardware (perhaps a video disc and video disc player and a television monitor in addition to the pc)? If yes, do you forsee that they will be phased out/displaced by the newer CD-ROM multimedia products in your library? Thanks for your help!
