I too am in a situation where I might have funds to spend out of this year's budget. But the director and his administrative assistant also feel uncomfortable about putting that much money up front. We've decided to go with option 2, paying it over 3 years. It still comes to the same thing -- paying all $6000 up front before publication but it spreads the cost over the 3 year period. Grove is noted for wanting as much money up front as possible; and publication is often delayed beyond the projected date. When the Dictionary of Music was announced, they offered it for around $800. When it was finally published about 3 or 4 years later, the price went up to around $2200. (2)---------------------------------------------------------------- From: Marsha Hamilton (Ohio State U.) Subject: Pre-payment of Grove's _Dictionary of Art_ Date: Thu, 26 May 1994 16:54:16 -0400 (EDT) We're also considering purchasing the _Dictionary of Art_ from Grove's on the pre-pay discount plan. Grove's is a respected publisher with a list of major works. If you order in advance of publication, the price is substantially lower and Grove's pays freight. Although no one can predict the future, it seems low risk. To reduce the risk, you might order through a vendor. However, I contacted Grove's in February, and our vendor contacted them in May, and they weren't giving a vendor discount. We'd have to pay a vendor service charge plus freight so we'll go direct. (3)---------------------------------------------------------------- From: Timo Sandham (Rand Afrikaans Univ.) Subject: Accuracy of prices Date: 26 May 94 12:58:34 GMT+2 We have just completed an examination of order prices of books and the actual invoice prices of those same books. We discovered that of book prices verified beforehand in Bowker's Books in print (CD-ROM version) only 65 percent were invoiced at the same price, while 10 percent were invoiced at lower prices and 25 percent were invoiced at higher prices. Prices verified in Whitaker's (CD-ROM version) were invoiced at the same price in 85 percent of the cases examined. This examination was conducted over a short period and we would like to know whether anybody else on ACQNET has noticed a similar trend. (4)---------------------------------------------------------------- From: Karen Schmidt Subject: Report from Feather River Date: Wed, 25 May 1994 16:46:34 -0400 REPORT FROM THE FEATHER RIVER CONFERENCE A Vision for Acquisitions At the recent Feather River Conference, one of the discussions involved developing a vision for acquisitions, based on a model used in business settings. Part of the outcome was a collective vision for acquisitions. A full description will be forthcoming in LAPT, but many conference participants suggested that ACQNET readers would be interested in the general vision statement that arose from our discussions. VALUES AND BELIEFS 1. Acquisitions is a vital link in the cycle of selectors, publishers, cataloguers, and users. 2. Acquisitions is innovative and successful in obtaining materials in any format, and maintaining quality vendors and agents. 3. Acquisitions embraces both access and ownership, regardless of the technology. 4. Acquisitions values its staff. PURPOSE We facilitate the acquisition of and access to material in any format in a cost-effective and timely fashion; we provide financial management information; we measure and evaluate sources of supply. MISSION We are respected for our knowledge of how to acquire or access material selected for our library, and for our ability to expedite it. (Buy the Core, Access the Rest, and Be Quick About It) VIVID DESCRIPTION Joe Barker provided this with a schemata that included the ideas expressed above. * * * * * * One team of conference-goers went off into the mountains and communed with nature before submitting their version of a vision for acquisitions. It should strike a chord with many! VALUES AND BELIEFS 1. Everything is going to hell in a hand basket. 2. We are committed to providing users with information, within the resources available to us, before they start bitching. 3. We know more than anyone else. PURPOSE To turn the desires of collection development into reality and to educate library staff as to what are reasonable expectations as defined by us. MISSION To turn acquisitions into the largest and most robust empire in the library. VIVID DESCRIPTION Everyone will have to go through us for approval of anything.
