Kay (Humboldt State U.) Subject: Subscription pricing of _LAPT_ Date: Tue, 01 Nov 1994 14:38:00 -0500 I wonder if others are troubled by the apparently new pricing structure for LAPT (Library Acquisitions: Practice and Theory). This journal seems essential to keep up with the tasks at hand, yet for 1995 seems to no longer offer individual subscriptions. The sample issue I have (v. 18, no. 2 for 1994) indicates only an institutional price, plus the following: "Associated Personal Subscription Rates are available on request for those whose institutions are library subscribers." Now, mine is a small place, with a materials budget under $1 million. I am hard put to justify $140 for the institution, and am more inclined to think of a personal subscription since the magazine is a working tool for me alone, and most unlikely to be used by a wider group on any regular basis. We have only 10 professionals, and no one else works in my specialty. Frankly, I am somewhat upset to see an editorial board with so many names well-known in the profession, yet in support of such a pricing structure. Oh, I received confirmation from the Tarrytown office that there is no individual subscription rate for 1995. Comments? Other information? [Ed. note: I forwarded this message to Carol Hawks, Editor of _LAPT_. She is going to bring this up to the _LAPT_ editorial board. I'll expect we'll hear from her soon.] (2)---------------------------------------------------------------- From: Jim Mumm (Marquette U. Law Library) <9724MUMMJ@vmsa.csd.mu.edu> Subject: Acquisitions Workshops Date: Wed, 02 Nov 1994 10:19:56 -0500 I have been given approval to develop a series of Acquisitions Workshops for the American Association of Law Libraries (AALL), and would like to ask: what kind of information would you, as acquisitions librarians, include in a: a basic workshop, and b: an advanced workshop? I have some ideas that I am working with, and have several people helping with this, but I would like to get more thoughts. One theme that I am working with is something to the effect of "professionalism in acquisitions" or "developing the professional side of acquisitions." Any thoughts on specific topics would be most welcome. Thanks in advance. [Ed. note: See ACQNET 4:44 and 4:49 for descriptions of recent ALCTS Institutes on Acquisitions - I would suggest touching base with the planners of those institutes, if you haven't already] (3)---------------------------------------------------------------- From: Mary H. Kay (Humboldt State U.) Subject: Out of print vendors Date: Wed, 02 Nov 1994 14:33:06 -0700 (PDT) I was quite interested in the mention of Jay Rausch and Serendipity Books as "high yield OP vendors", and would appreciate their addresses and phone numbers if readily available. Subject: One-stop shopping for foreign languages Date: Thu, 03 Nov 94 08:59:00 cst Has anyone tried using one vendor for foreign languages on approval? I would like to include Spanish-, German-, and French-language materials in our approval program, even though (1) we have little to spend on them and (2) the vendor we've chosen doesn't really do foreign languages. I was considering trying one European-based vendor for all three languages. Does anyone have any experience with such an arrangement? Does anyone have any suggestions or comments? (6)---------------------------------------------------------------- From: Margaret Field (METC Library) Subject: Request for Information re: Weeding Policies in a Library Date: Fri, 04 Nov 1994 15:30:45 -0500 I currently work in a government library and we are in the process of automating our entire collection. However, during this process we have come across many items that we feel could be disposed of or "weeded" from the collection. Our inventory was the first done in many, many years and there has never been any type of policy to throw anything out, forward it to another location, etc. We are unable to do any of this until we have a firm policy. I am looking for anyone who can share any information regarding weeding policies in libraries and more specific "government" libraries. Thank you in advance for any information you can provide. ****** END OF FILE ****** ACQNET, Vol. 4, No. 57 ****** END OF FILE ******
