Please excuse the repetition.] Greetings fellow Acquisitions Professionals! I work in acquisitions at a seminary. Our collection numbers about 150,000 volumes and we have 6 professional librarians working here plus support staff. I acquire about 3500-4000 books annually and maintain over 500 monographic standing orders. Periodicals are ordered in another department. Although we have a fully integrated library catalog (Dynix) with an acquisitions module I have been using other software to do my acquisitions work, Bib-Base produced by Library Technologies. This software has been adequate and efficient to use and I decided to keep on using it in 1996 instead of the acquisitions module in Dynix because in this setting it performs well and does exactly what I need it to do including helping me track the standing orders we maintain. The sad news is Bib-Base is on its way out; the vendor has decided to stop upgrading it and will cease supplying technical support though they assure us the latest upgrade made the software Y2K compatible. My question is this: Are there other stand-alone acquisitions softwares that are equally as good? Please let me know of your experience with any products you especially like and find easy to use. One reason we did not migrate to Dynix was that fact that it does not support MARC in the acquisitions module. Therefore, I am particularly interested in systems that do support MARC. And, as implied above, I am interested in systems that allow for the tracking of standing orders. Secondly, are there other acquisitions librarians out there who are on integrated systems who are especially happy with how the acquisitions module works? I would love to hear from you. When going on to the publishers' home page, it is necessary to first go to their catalogue and then get finally to their address. Also, when searching via www.lights.com/publisher the same problem exists. There seems to be no quick and simple way to get immediately to the publishers' address. I will be interested to hear if anyone has been able to solve this problem. It is possible to answer to me directly or to the listserver whichever is more convenient. They always manage to get books from Portugal quickly - no mean feat! - and will do all sorts of useful things like invoicing in U.S. dollars. Worth giving them a try. The committee will pursue the topic of acquisitions in a consortium environment as a possible program topic for ALA 2000. AS Education Committee will be looking at ways that the committee can promote the recruitment of librarians to the acquisitions field, an aspect of the committee charge that has not received much attention. The committee also continues its planning of the Fundamentals of Acquisitions and Business of Acquisitions institutes and preconferences for future years. AS Publications Committee reports that two publications are nearing completion: the Licensing Guide and the Budget Guide (being worked on jointly with the Collection Management and Development Section). The Foreign Book and Serial Dealer Directories series now has three Directories available in print and on the ALA web site, and will begin updating information in the directories, including the addition of URLs if possible. Ideas for future publications include a guide to procurement procedures, and a revision of the CD-ROM purchasing guide. AS Policy and Planning Committee continues its review of section committees, with adjustments to charges where necessary. AS Research and Statistics committee is developing a guide to constructing surveys for gathering research data in acquisitions. The committee is also exploring the possibility of providing an electronic mentoring program for conducting research. AS Technology Committee is working on a program for the 2000 annual conference: "Streamlined links in acquisitions." The Vendor Research and Development Subcommittee continues its work on surveying automated acquisitions products.
