   Cambridge Scientific Abstracts provides a number of subscriber-only databases 
   and environmental references which can be reached through this site, including 
   a number of biochemical databases, the METADEX  metals and materials database,

 - Chemical Abstracts Service

   Chemical Abstracts Service, a division of the American Chemical Society, is the 
   premier provider of current information from the literature of chemistry.  This 
   site includes information on CAS's print and electronic products and services, 
   including documentation on STN International (the online service provided by 
   CAS) and its commands and databases.  If you have an STN account, you can 
   access a number of STN databases via the

   Chemical Information Service, a service of the Oxford Molecular Group, provides 
   access to over thirty databases with chemical information, especially 
   environmental data. This site gives a list of the databases available on CIS, and 
   contact information. 
 - Derwent, Inc.

   Derwent is the world's leading producer of patent information databases, 
   including the Derwent World Patents Index, and a number of specialty 
   databases.  This site includes some brief descriptions of the nature of patents 
   and the patenting process.  Derwent also maintains the 
   Patent Explorer site (http://www.patentexplorer.com), a 
   Web-based tool for searching and displaying U.S. and European Patent Office 
   patents.  Membership is required, and there are fees for displaying patents, 
   but membership is free until July 1, 1998. [Note: Patent Explorer was 
   discontinued 12/31/99]
 - The Dialog Corporation

   The Dialog Corporation is the world's largest provider of information access, 
   including both traditional online and Web access to the DIALOG and DataStar 
   systems.  The site above is the new home site for Dialog, and some of the 
   information at the Web site is still in transition from the old web site, but 
   there are links to the older site where necessary.

   OCLC produces the WorldCat international library catalog and provides access to 
   many other databases through its FirstSearch and EPIC services. These may be

   SilverPlatter is a major distributor of databases on CD-ROM and over the
   Internet (by subscription only.) 
 - Technical Database Services, Inc.

   TDS provides access to a large number of chemical property databases, especially 
   dealing with thermodynamic and environmental properties of chemicals.  This web 
   site includes an online form for submitting requests for data on chemicals or 
   mixtures of chemicals.  There is a charge per value retrieved, with a minimum 
   fee of $50.

publishers have browsable or searchable catalogs; most journal publishers have 
subscription information, information for prospective authors and some have 
searchable or browsable tables of contents or full text (usually subscriber only.)

   The electronic versions of 26 American Chemical Society journals are now available.
   They contain the full journal from 1996-present, in browsable and searchable
   form, with both HTML and Adobe Acrobat PDF versions of the pages, containing 
   all graphics, with links to supporting material.  The full text of the following
   journals is available to Internet subscribers only; print subscribers can obtain 
   recent tables-of contents and recent abstracts and supporting material; anyone 
   may view the instructions to authors, current tables-of-contents and author 
   indexes. 
   Starting in 1998, Web edition subscribers only have access to "Articles ASAP" - 
   the full text of articles ready for publication, some 2-11 weeks before they 
   appear in the printed journals.
